  • Patent number: 9386861
Abstract: A spring assembly includes telescopically adjustable inner and outer members biased in an extension direction by a coil spring. A preload member is provided to apply a compression preload to the coil spring. The preload member can eliminate stickiness and the popping sound that are drawbacks of the prior art, and the fabric sleeve also provides general noise reduction when the spring assembly changes length.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: July 12, 2016
Assignee: OTIS BED MANUFACTURING COMPANY, INC.
    Inventor: John K. Roma
  • Patent number: 8918934
Abstract: A mattress assembly may include a foam frame, an inner assembly within the foam frame, the inner assembly including a foam core and a pocketed coil assembly. The pocketed coil assembly can include a plurality of individual pocketed coil springs having a height. Each coil spring may be joined together to a neighboring coil spring such that at least a majority of the height of each coil spring is configured to vertically deflect without deflecting the joined neighboring coil spring.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 8714531
Abstract: A spring assembly includes telescopically adjustable inner and outer members biased in an extension direction by a coil spring. A non-stretch fabric sleeve fitted about an inner diameter and an outer diameter of the coil spring is closed at its opposite ends to apply a compression preload to the coil spring. The fabric sleeve prevents transmission of the preload to the inner and outer telescoping members, thereby eliminating stickiness and the popping sound that are drawbacks of the prior art, and the fabric sleeve also provides general noise reduction when the spring assembly changes length.

  • Patent number: 7591028
Abstract: An automatically adjustable futon frame includes a back and a seat pivotally joined to one another for folding about a transverse axis extending between opposite sides of the frame. A single motor is mounted on the seat and includes a transversely extending drive shaft on which a pair of pinions are mounted. The pinions are arranged to mate with a pair of toothed racks fixed to the opposite sides of the frame. The drive shaft may be arranged to extend through opposite side members of the seat, and ends of the drive shaft may be received in channels in the sides of the frame. A pair of link arms are provided on each side of the frame to pivotally connect the back to the sides of the frame. The motor is operable to adjust the frame between a sofa position and a bed position.

  • Publication number: 20030172455
Abstract: A futon frame having a base supporting a back and a seat for adjustment between a flat bed position and a sofa position comprises at least one spring having a first end mounted to the base and a second end mounted to the seat for assisting a user in adjusting the back and seat from the bed position to the sofa position. A detent member attached to the seat engages an abutment surface fixed relative to the base to releasably lock the seat in its bed position counter to the spring force. A user lifts a front end of the seat to disengage the detent member and begin adjustment. The spring acts generally along a direction of travel of the seat during adjustment.

  • Patent number: 6138299
Abstract: A futon frame includes a pair of linear actuators mounted at opposing sides thereof for driving a folding seat and back of the frame to automatically and continuously adjust the seat and back between a sofa position and a bed position. The back is connected to opposing sides of the frame by upper and lower follower bearings arranged for travel within corresponding upper and lower guide channels in each opposing side of the frame. A motor controller is mounted to the underside of the seat for connecting a user interface to the linear actuator motors.
