    Abstract: A tamping tool for tamping ballast in place is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the tamping tool comprises a shank and a paddle. The paddle has an upper and lower portion; the upper portion has a plurality of apertures and the lower portion is coupled to a paddle. The paddle has a first face, a second face, and a tip. A first shoulder is disposed in the first face and defines a recess leading to the tip of the paddle. The paddle also has a plurality of first wear tiles. The plurality of first wear tiles each has an upper portion terminating in an upper edge and a lower portion that defines a ridge and which tapers into a rounded tip. The plurality of first wear tiles are at least partially provided in the recess such that the upper edge of each first wear tile at least partially abuts the first shoulder, the ridge defined in each first wear tile partially abuts the tip of the paddle, and the lower portion of each wear tile wraps substantially around the tip.
