  • Patent number: 7548975
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for implementing storage virtualization on a network device of a storage area network are disclosed. A virtual enclosure is created that has one or more virtual enclosure ports and is adapted for representing one or more virtual storage units. Each of the virtual storage units represents one or more physical storage locations on one or more physical storage units of the storage area network. Each of the virtual enclosure ports of the virtual enclosure is associated with a port of a network device within the storage area network. An address or identifier is then assigned to each of the virtual enclosure ports.

  • Patent number: 5633869
Abstract: Asynchronous Transfer Mode Local Area Network (ATM LAN). The ATM LAN is implemented as a set of MAC entities which share a common group address space for the purposes of establishing multicast connections. Each station has one or more ATM MAC entities per physical connection to an ATM network. The network ATM LAN service provides the station with ATM LAN configuration information needed for ATM MAC operation. Included in this information is the number of ATM LANs the network has configured for that station.

  • Patent number: 5491802
Abstract: A computing system is connected to a network. The computing system includes a network adapter and a main memory. The network adapter receives from the network a network packet having a plurality of headers. The network adapter inserts at least one pad byte within one of the plurality of headers to cause the plurality of headers in the network packet to be aligned along predetermined multi-byte boundaries. For example, the multi-byte boundaries are four-byte boundaries. After inserting the at least one pad byte, the network adapter forwards the network packet to the main memory.

  • Patent number: 5430842
Abstract: A system implements checksumming of a network packet to be sent over a network. A processor constructs the network packet within a main memory. The network packet is transferred from the main memory to a packet storage memory within a network adapter. During the transfer, the network adapter calculates a checksum for the network packet. The network adapter then inserts the checksum into the network packet within the packet storage memory. The network adapter then sends the network packet to the network. In order to calculate the checksum for the network packet, hardware within the network adapter "snoops" an internal bus within the network adapter as the network packet is transported to the packet storage memory. Also, a checksum header is prepended to the network packet which includes control information for checksumming.
