At least one cavity opens onto the bottom surface laterally inwardly of the periphery and extends upwardly into the marker body. A venting groove extends along the bottom surface from the cavity to the periphery to provide a vent for air trapped in the cavity when the marker is urged into a pool of adhesive to secure the marker to a roadway. The venting of air provides a stronger bond between the marker and adhesive. Markers having a rounded top surface may be provided with a flat bottom portion with abutment surfaces to facilitate movement of a line of the markers in an automated system.

    Abstract: An installation head is mounted on a vehicle and moves along and adjacent to a roadway as the vehicle moves along the roadway. The head has a loading station at the bottom of a vertical loading chamber and a slide that slides along a floor to move markers out of the loading station into a setting station. A setting ram forces markers down onto adhesive prepositioned on the roadway. A plurality of heads may be positioned on the vehicle and may form opposite rows for simultaneously installing markers on opposite sides of a traffic lane. An indexed marker that interlocks with adjacent markers to prevent tilting may be used to maximize the reliability of the system. Various types of delivery devices may be used to deliver markers to the loading station. These include a delivery platform or carrousel positioned above the loading chamber to deliver markers down into the loading chamber. They also include a collating tape that delivers markers into the loading chamber through a side opening.

    Abstract: A mounting rail extends longitudinally along a vehicle. An installation head is mounted on the vehicle in a position fixed relative to the rail and adjacent to a first end portion of the rail. The head has a setting station from which road markers may be dispensed down onto a roadway. A glue dispenser assembly is slidably mounted on the rail. The assembly includes a dispenser with a nozzle, an anchor, and an anchor actuator. The assembly has a forward index position on a second end portion of the rail. The actuator is operable to move the anchor down into engagement with the roadway to prevent movement of the assembly relative to the roadway. A return actuator is connected to the assembly to allow the assembly to slide along the rail when the anchor is down and to positively move the assembly forwardly along the rail to return it to the index position.

    Abstract: A glue dispenser is mountable on a vehicle as part of apparatus for installing raised road markers on a roadway. Preferably, the apparatus is used in a system for automated installation of road markers. The dispenser includes a manifold having an inlet for glue fed downwardly into the manifold from a glue reservoir mounted on the vehicle. First and second glue outlets communicate with the inlet. First and second valves control opening and closing of the first and second outlets, respectively. The valves are operable both simultaneously and independently of each other to permit glue to be dispensed from only of the outlets or from both of the outlets simultaneously, as needed. The outlets are spaced apart a distance equal to a desired distance between lines of markers in a double line installation.

Microprocessor 34 monitors the position of wallboard line 10 by way of roller 28 and pulse generator 30. Microprocessor 34 also monitors the position of rotary knife 18 as measured from a park position by way of pulse generator 36. The position of wallboard line 10 is compared to the distance of travel of knife 18 from the park position and a control signal proportional to the difference in positions is generated to control motor 17 and in turn drive rotary knife 18 to sever a predetermined length 26.
