Publication number: 20120292062Abstract: A diesel hammer comprises a housing, an anvil, and a release valve. A combustion chamber is formed within the housing below the anvil. The release valve operates in a closed configuration in which fluid is substantially prevented from flowing out of the combustion chamber and an open configuration in which fluid is allowed to flow out of the combustion chamber through the release valve. The diesel hammer operates in a cycle mode in which the release valve is in the closed configuration and, when the anvil moves from an upper position to a lower position, the anvil compresses fluids within the combustion chamber and an interrupt mode in which the release valve is in the open configuration and, when the anvil moves from the upper position to the lower position, the anvil does not substantially compress the fluids within the combustion chamber.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2012Publication date: November 22, 2012Applicant: AMERICAN PILEDRIVING EQUIPMENT, INC.Inventor: John L. Patent number: 8308803Abstract: This invention relates to methods and instruments for performing a surgical procedure in a disc space between adjacent vertebrae. A cannula is inserted to create a working channel through the skin and tissue of a patient using a transformational approach to the disc space. A viewing element is used to visualize working end of the cannula and the disc space. A facetectomy is performed through the working channel to access the disc space. The disc space is prepared with various instruments, such as distractors, shims, chisels and distractor-cutters that extend through the working channel. At least implant is inserted into the disc space. The procedure allows bi-lateral support of the adjacent vertebrae with the at least one implant inserted via a unitary, minimally invasive approach to disc space.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2008Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: Warsaw Orthopedic, Inc.Inventors: Kevin T. Patent number: 8186452Abstract: A clamp system for an elongate member, comprising first and second clamp members, an actuator member, and an actuator system. The actuator member defines an actuator cam surface and is supported for movement between first and second actuator positions. The second clamp member defines a clamp cam surface and is supported for movement between first and second clamp positions. The actuator system displaces the actuator member between first and second actuator positions. As the actuator member moves from the first actuator position to the second actuator position, the actuator cam surface engages the clamp cam surface to cause the second clamp member to move towards the first clamp member, thereby clamping a portion of the elongate member between the first and second clamp members.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2006Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: American Piledriving Equipment, Inc.Inventors: John L. Patent number: 8181713Abstract: A drop hammer for driving a pile. The drop hammer of the present invention comprises a housing member, a ram member, a helmet member, and a lifting system. The housing member defines a housing chamber and a vent port defining a preload position. The ram member is supported for movement within the housing chamber. When the lifting system raises the ram member above the preload position, ambient air substantially freely flows into and out of the housing chamber through the vent port. When the ram member falls below the preload position, ambient air within a preload chamber portion of the housing chamber compresses to apply a preload force on the inner portion of the helmet member. When the ram member moves into the lower position, the ram member impacts the helmet member to force the helmet member from the rest position to the impact position, thereby driving the pile.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2010Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: American Piledriving Equipment, Inc.Inventor: John L. White
