Publication number: 20180373832Abstract: Detecting cross-contamination between test samples used for determining cancer in a subject is beneficial. To detect cross-contamination, test sequences including at least one single nucleotide polymorphism are prepared using genome sequencing techniques. Some of the test sequences can be filtered to improve accuracy and precision. A prior contamination probability for each test sequence is determined based on a minor allele frequency. A contamination model including a likelihood test is applied to a test sequence. The likelihood test obtains a current contamination probability representing the likelihood that the test sample is contaminated. The contamination model can also determine a likelihood that the sample includes loss of heterozygosity representing the likelihood that the test sequence is contaminated. Test samples that are contaminated are removed. A source for the contaminated test sample can be found by comparing contaminated test sequences to other test sequences.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2018Publication date: December 27, 2018Inventors: Onur Sakarya, John Lamping

Patent number: 9569504Abstract: A system analyzes one or more search streams to detect one or more associations between a document and one or more queries in the one or more search streams. The system further derives a value for the document based on the detected associations and uses the derived value in evaluating a quality of the document with respect to one or more subsequent queries.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2014Date of Patent: February 14, 2017Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: John Lamping, Mark Pearson

Patent number: 9483530Abstract: A system determines whether a term of a search query is a term with little significance based on a context of the search query. The system performs a search based on the search query while considering the term with little significance as optional when the search query includes the term with little significance and presents a list of search results based on the search.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2014Date of Patent: November 1, 2016Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: John Lamping, Christophe Bisciglia

Patent number: 9183311Abstract: A system and method for providing preferred language and/or country ordering of search results is described. A search query describing potentially retrievable information provided in a plurality of search result languages and/or countries is received. A search is executed by evaluating the search query against information characteristics maintained in a searchable data repository. At least one preferred language and/or country applicable to search results generated is dynamically determined responsive to the executed search. At least some of the search results are ordered in consideration of the at least one preferred language and/or country.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2012Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: Vineet Gupta, Benedict Gomes, John Lamping, Mizuki McGrath, Amitabh K Singhal, Simon Tong

Patent number: 8595066Abstract: Maximum offers in an online advertising space (and/or some enhanced ad rendering attribute) arbitration may be discounted such that there exists a dominant bidding strategy, whereby advertisers can choose optimal maximum offers without knowing anything about their competitors' behavior, and without knowing anything about the relative selection rates for different ad spot positions (or the relative values of different enhanced ad rendering attributes that advertisers may compete for). Arbitrations can be run combining offers for use in arbitrations with a first price discounting method, with offers for use in arbitrations with a second price discounting technique.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2004Date of Patent: November 26, 2013Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: John Lamping, Robert Shillingsburg, Eric Veach

Patent number: 8577907Abstract: A search query for a search engine may be improved by incorporating alternate terms into the search query that are semantically similar to terms of the search query, taking into account information derived from the search query. An initial set of alternate terms that may be semantically similar to the original terms in the search query is generated. The initial set of alternate terms may be compared to information derived from the original search query. One example of such information is a set of documents retrieved in response to a search performed using the initial search query. One or more of the alternate terms may be added to the original search query based on their relationship to the information derived from the original search query.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2011Date of Patent: November 5, 2013Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: Amit Singhal, Mehran Sahami, John Lamping, Marcin Kaszkiel, Monika H Henzinger

Patent number: 8521717Abstract: Web pages of a Website may be processed to improve search results. For example, information likely to pertain to more than just the Web page it is directly associated with may be identified. One or more other, related, Web pages that such information is likely to pertain to is also identified. The identified information is associated with the identified other Web page(s) and this association is saved in a way to affect a search result score of the Web page(s).Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2011Date of Patent: August 27, 2013Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: Daniel Egnor, Paul Haahr, Kevin Lackner, John Lamping, Amitabh K. Patent number: 7636714Abstract: A method is applied to search terms for determining synonyms or other replacement terms used in an information retrieval system. User queries are first sorted by user identity and session. For each user query, a plurality of pseudo-queries is determined, each pseudo-query derived from a user query by replacing a phrase of the user query with a token. For each phrase, at least one candidate synonym is determined. The candidate synonym is a term that was used within a user query in place of the phrase, and in the context of a pseudo-query. The strength or quality of candidate synonyms is evaluated. Validated synonyms may be either suggested to the user or automatically added to user search strings.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2005Date of Patent: December 22, 2009Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: John Lamping, Steven Baker

Patent number: 7469246Abstract: A method (and system) for associating an item with only less than ten categories from a collection of more than hundred categories. Each category includes a model, which determines a process. The process determines a degree of closeness to a set of features of items. The method includes receiving an item (e.g., document); and determining a set of features (e.g., word, number, author) associated with the item. The method also uses the set of features with two or more processes in respective categories out of the collection of more than one hundred categories to determine how well the set of features matches the two or more categories. A step of forming a blended model from two or more categories to derive a blended process is included. The blended process yields a closer fit to the set of features of the item than that of any single process of a category from the collection of categories. The method associates the item to each of the two or more categories that were used to form the blended process.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2001Date of Patent: December 23, 2008Assignee: Stratify, Inc.Inventor: John Lamping
