The straddle assembly is distally displaced from the template to reconfigure the template for drilling. A diverter is placed in the body of the template upon displacement of the straddle assembly to define a drill string path from the inlet leg to the offset outlet leg. The offset well bore is drilled by conveying a drill string through the drill string path.

    Abstract: A wellbore packer and slip combination for production tubing and the like comprises a plurality of slip elements that are caged together around the periphery of a cylindrical mandrel. An axially displaced actuator simultaneously engages all of the elements to ramp one end of all elements against a casing wall. After the one end of the slip and packer unit is set, further displacement of the actuator expands the other end of the elements against the casing wall. The packer and slip assembly may be retracted and recovered by a simultaneous lift and rotation of the tool string.

    Abstract: An inflatable packer is disclosed involving an expandable mandrel. The mandrel is initially corrugated, creating spaces for a material which can be pushed against an inflatable element when the corrugated mandrel is expanded. The mandrel can be expanded by use of fluid or mechanical forces. The mandrel can be configured to facilitate progressive expansion. Different fluids can be used to facilitate a permanent set using a hardenable material in the annular space between the mandrel and the element. Different materials can be used so that when subjected under pressure as the mandrel is expanded, they contact each other to form a hardenable filler material. A relief mechanism is provided to allow escape of excess inflation medium in certain circumstances. The yield strength of the mandrel material can vary along its length to facilitate progressive inflation. In certain applications, the inflatable described can also expand the casing in which it is mounted.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method of dropping a pumpdown plug or ball is revealed. The assembly can be integrally formed with a plug-dropping head or can be an auxiliary feature that is mounted to a plug-dropping head. The release mechanism is actuated by remote control, employing intrinsically safe circuitry. The circuitry, along with its self-contained power source, actuates a primary control member responsive to an input signal so as to allow component shifting for release of the pumpdown plug or ball. Multiple plug-dropping heads can be stacked, each responsive to a discrete release signal. Actuation to drop the pumpdown ball or plug is accomplished even while the components are rotating or are moving longitudinally. Using the apparatus and method of the present invention, personnel do not need to climb up in the derrick to actuate manual valves.

    Abstract: An apparatus and process are provided for drilling and completing multiple subterranean wells from a template which is secured within a cased well bore extending to the surface. An orienting cam having a bore therethrough is positioned above the template such that the bore through the orienting cam is automatically aligned with one of at least two bores through the template. Fluid tight seals are provided between the orienting cam and the casing and between the orienting cam and one of the at least two bores through the template. Thereafter, a drill string including a drill bit is lowered from the surface of the earth through the casing, the bore through the orienting cam and the one bore through said template to drill a first subterranean well bore.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a well packer which is set by pressure applied through a tubing string which supports the packer within a surrounding well conduit. Once set, the packer is retrievable by either longitudinal or rotary movement of the supporting tubing string. Setting pressure drives opposed cone assemblies longitudinally toward each other to cause slip segments to move radially outwardly into anchoring engagement with the surrounding well conduit. The lowermost cone assembly is constructed in the form of a split ring and is equipped with friction teeth along its internal surface to retain the packer in its set position. A helical retrieving component secures the packer assembly to the central mandrel of the packer. Righthand rotation of the tubing string causes the outer body of the packer to unthread from the helical retrieving component secured to the mandrel which in turn unsets the packer.
