Publication number: 20080277470Abstract: A device, method and system for voting are disclosed herein. The exemplary voting device may be comprised of a paper ballot unique to each voter, an ink pen which also houses an optical scanning device, multiple redundant electronic storage media devices whereupon cast votes and other information are recorded, and a voting management system used by voters to validate their selections and by poll workers and election judges to authenticate the ballot and resolve voting booth issues such as spoiled ballots. The device may facilitate the casting of votes and ensure their secure and accurate tallying.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2007Publication date: November 13, 2008Inventors: David Wesley Gallaher, John Loyd, Stephen Peter O'Brien, Robert Warren Woodward, JR.

Publication number: 20060087539Abstract: A system to recycle waste ink for reuse as replenishment fluid is for an inkjet print station that includes a printhead with a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. The system uses an ink supply tank, an external ink supply tank with fresh ink and an ink supply valve to control ink flow from the external ink supply tank to the ink supply tank. The system includes a replenishment fluid supply valve for controlling flow between a replenishment fluid supply and the ink supply tank, a device for monitoring ink concentration in communication with ink, a waste tank and a waste reuse valve for controlling flow between the waste tank and ink supply tank. The system includes level sensors and one or more controllers to control any valves, sensors, and pumps associated with the system to optimize operation of the system.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 21, 2004Publication date: April 27, 2006Inventors: John Loyd, James McCann

Patent number: 7004478Abstract: A metallic seal is provided that concentrates the available load over a narrow band to produce a sealing dam over a sufficient width to minimize leakage on a molecular level. The metallic seal has a first annular end section with has a first annular sealing surface, a second annular end section with a second annular sealing surface and an annular center section extending between the first and second annular end sections to form a ring having a central passageway with a center longitudinal axis. The third annular section is frustoconical tube with the first and second annular end sections being contiguously arranged at opposite ends of the annular center section such that sealing loads applied substantially perpendicularly on the first and second annular sealing surfaces primarily deform due to torsional stress of the metallic seal.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2001Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: PerkinElmer Inc.Inventors: John Loyd Spence, Stephen B. Rowland

Publication number: 20050248641Abstract: The method for controlling ink migration onto a catcher of an ink jet print station from catch condition using a low surface tension ink entails bringing an ink jet print station using low surface tension ink into catch condition with the eyelid sealably engaging the catcher and the catcher flow pan, and using an eyelid actuator to unseal the eyelid forming a gap between the catcher flow pan, the catcher, and the eyelid. The method ends by operating the ink jet print station with the eyelid unsealed to suppress migration of the low surface tension ink onto the catcher during standby mode.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2004Publication date: November 10, 2005Inventors: Paul Hengesbach, John Loyd

Publication number: 20050248609Abstract: An automatic startup sequence for an ink jet print station using solvent based ink entails introducing a flushing fluid to the drop generator using the flushing fluid pump at a drive level and a flushing pressure that enables flushing fluid to flow through the jet array at a flow rate adequate to permit the catcher assembly to extract the flushing fluid; engaging the ink pump; and increasing the pressure of the flushing fluid from the initial pressure. The increased pressure is high enough for stable drop formation and drop deflection from the jet array and low enough to extract drops from the catcher, and to permit flushing fluid to flow freely through the catcher. The method ends by simultaneously opening the ink supply valve and closing the flushing fluid valve permitting ink to flow into the drop generator; and then stopping the flow of the flushing fluid.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2004Publication date: November 10, 2005Inventors: Paul Hengesbach, John Loyd

Patent number: 6409180Abstract: A metallic seal is provided that concentrates the available load over a narrow band to produce a sealing dam over a sufficient width to minimize leakage on a molecular level. The metallic seal has a first annular beam section, a second annular beam section, and inner and outer surfaces extending between the first and second annular beam sections. One of the inner and outer surfaces has an annular recess that at least partially defines an annular column section of material extending substantially perpendicular between said first and second annular beam sections thereto. The first annular beam section has a first non-sealing surface and a first raised portion with a first annular sealing surface facing in a first axial direction to contact a first member for creating a first annular sealing dam therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2000Date of Patent: June 25, 2002Assignee: PerkinElmer, Inc.Inventors: John Loyd Spence, Kevin R. Felber

Patent number: 4918432Abstract: A house arrest monitoring system that automatically verifies the presence or absence of prisoners, patients or other personnel who are required to remain at a prescribed location or to report to the prescribed location at a certain time. The system includes an identification tag that is worn by the individual being monitored. This tag transmits an identification signal that includes a unique identifying code, as well as status information that indicates whether the tag has been removed from near the flesh of the individual being monitored. The tag is totally self-contained and includes circuitry to sense when the tag is held near the flesh of the individual, as well as code generating and transmitting circuitry to periodically generate and transmit the identification signal. A field monitoring device (FMD) is included at the prescribed location to receive and process the identification signal, and to communicate with a central processing unit (CPU) located at a remote central monitoring location.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1989Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignee: B. I. IncorporatedInventors: James D. Pauley, Allen E. Ripingill, Jr., James B. Waite, John Loyd
