  • Patent number: 10181132
Abstract: A media player is provided. The media player comprises a communications interface, a memory store containing a plurality of personalized advertisements, and a media playback component. The targeted advertisements are refreshed by receiving updates from the communications interface during some of the intervals when the media player is connected to a network. The targeted advertisements are indexed by a plurality of characteristics, the first characteristic being a creation date of the targeted advertisements. The media playback component is configured to play a media content, wherein the media content is stored separately from the targeted advertisements, and to play one of the targeted advertisements in the memory store selected based on the characteristics of the one of the targeted advertisements.

  • Patent number: 10009814
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for communicating with a first wireless network, such as a wireless wide area network (WWAN), and a second interface for communicating with a second wireless network, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN). While the multi-mode mobile station has a first connection with the first wireless network, the multi-mode mobile station establishes a second connection with the second wireless network. When the second connection is established, the second wireless network transmits an acknowledgement signal to the multi-mode mobile station. In response to the acknowledgment signal, the multi-mode mobile station disables the first connection with the first wireless network and powers down the first interface.

  • Patent number: 9559864
Abstract: A wireless device includes a self-activation client that allows a user to activate a communication service for that wireless device and for one or more other wireless devices. The communication service may use a long-range type of wireless communication, such as 1×RTT CDMA, EV-DO, GSM, or IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) communication. During the activation process, the wireless device communicates with a device management server using the long-range type of wireless communication but communicates with the one or more other wireless devices using a short-range type of wireless communication, such as IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), Bluetooth, or infrared communication. After the communication service has been activated, the wireless device may subsequently communicate with the device management server in order to manage the communication service for itself and/or for one or more other wireless devices (e.g., to receive updates or to make changes).

  • Patent number: 9215641
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second interface for wireless communication with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). A call control system routes all calls to and from the multi-mode mobile station through a media gateway that serves as an anchor point for handoffs between the WLAN and WWAN. For example, while involved in a call that has a WLAN call leg from the media gateway, the multi-mode mobile transmits a handoff request. The call control system then establishes a WWAN call leg from the media gateway, and the multi-mode mobile station stores in a buffer any media received via the WWAN call leg. The call control system subsequently transmits a handoff instruction to the multi-mode mobile station. In response, the multi-mode mobile station plays out the stored media and drops the WLAN call leg.

  • Patent number: 9125058
Abstract: A method and system for providing connections from a wireless access point. The wireless access point has multiple VPN tunnels. The access point detects a wireless-network identifier (such as a service set identifier (SSID)) provided by a terminal via an air interface, and the access point uses the wireless-network identifier as a basis to select one of the VPN tunnels. The access point then sends communication from the terminal via the selected VPN tunnel.

  • Patent number: 8954834
Abstract: A system is provided for widget to widget communication. The system includes a first device, a second device, and a communication server. The first device and/or the second device are a mobile device. The communication server provides a first widget to the first device and provides a second widget to the second device, wherein the first widget and the second widget are portable code that is installed and executed in a corresponding runtime environment without additional compilation. The first widget, when executed by the first device, communicates information that identifies content associated with the first widget and a state of the content via the first device to the communication server. The communication server communicates the information and the state to the second device. The second widget, when executed by the second device, presents at least some of the content based on the information and the state in coordination with the first widget presenting the content.

  • Patent number: 8768322
Abstract: A mobile station communicating with a first radio network, such as a WLAN, may detect that it is communicating with an access point located at a perimeter of a coverage area of the first radio network rather than communicating with an access point located within an interior of the coverage area. The mobile station might further detect one or both of first and second directional signals transmitted from the access point. In response, the mobile station might perform one or more predetermined actions, such as checking the availability of a radio network other than the WLAN, performing a handoff, sounding an alarm or some other action.

  • Patent number: 8749494
Abstract: A device with a touch screen offset pointer is provided. The device includes a processor; a touch screen, and a navigator engine. When executed by the processor, the navigator engine detects a first touch input at a first location on the touch screen, determines a first offset for a pointer to overlay on content displayed by the touch screen, and displays the pointer on the touch screen at the first offset from the first location. The navigator engine also detects a second touch input at a second location on the touch screen, determines a second offset for the pointer, and displays the pointer on the touch screen at the second offset from the second location.

  • Patent number: 8752160
Abstract: A system is provided comprising a computer system and a dynamic network interfaces application that executes on the computer system. The dynamic network interfaces application activates a virtual local area network (VLAN) by associating subnet interface information and a virtual local area network tag, wherein the virtual local area network tag is unrelated to and randomly combined with the subnet interface information, and by transmitting the association of the subnet interface information and the virtual local area network tag to a firewall component and to a network access component.

  • Patent number: 8665864
Abstract: A method to translate between Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) numbers and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) addresses without performing an address translation database lookup. A network gateway receives and translates a first endpoint identifier associated with a destination client device to a second endpoint identifier associated with the destination client device. The first endpoint identifier is either a PSTN number or a VoIP address comprising at least the PSTN number and a predefined suffix and the second endpoint identifier is the other of the PSTN number and the VoIP address. The network gateway translates the first endpoint identifier to the second endpoint identifier without performing an address translation database lookup, by either adding the predefined suffix to or removing the predefined suffix from the first endpoint identifier.

  • Patent number: 8667542
Abstract: A mobile electronic device is provided. The mobile electronic device comprises a radio receiver, an application that selects a message, and an output device to present the message. The radio receiver receives the message broadcast in a television spectrum band. The application, when executed on the mobile electronic device, selects the message for presentation on the mobile electronic device based on at least one of a location of the mobile electronic, a history based user profile associated with the mobile electronic device, and a selection criteria input into the mobile electronic device. The output device then presents the message.

  • Patent number: 8644833
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second interface for wireless communication with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). A mobility server facilitates call handoffs for the multi-mode mobile station, from the WLAN to the WWAN and vice versa. The mobility server maintains an activity log for the multi-mode mobile station. When the multi-mode mobile station becomes involved in a call, the mobility server stores call information regarding the call in the activity log. During the call, the multi-mode mobile station transmits a handoff request. In response to the handoff request, the mobility server controls establishment of a bearer path for call handoff between the WLAN and the WWAN, based on the call information contained in the activity log.

  • Patent number: 8614976
Abstract: A mobile node is associated with a username assigned by the mobile node's wireless service provider and a nickname selected by the mobile node's user. The nickname is different than the username. When the mobile node logs on for packet data services, the mobile node is assigned a home address and an on-line registration is established in a DNS server. The on-line registration associates the nickname with the home address. The DNS server may then be queried to determine that the mobile node with that nickname is on-line and/or to determine how to reach the mobile node with that nickname. When the mobile node goes off-line, the on-line registration may be changed to an off-line registration that associates the nickname with an address of a messaging server. The messaging server may receive messages for the mobile node and/or provide messages indicating that the mobile node is off-line.
