Patent number: 6428343Abstract: An electrical connector is disclosed for the electrical connection between insulated power conductors and a printed circuit board. The electrical connector is defined by an insulated housing having a plurality of side-by-side cavities to receive the electrical contacts. The electrical contacts are of the wire-trap style, where a wire is trapped between a portion of the terminal and a resilient tongue, which is reversely bent beneath a contact portion. The electrical contacts further include printed circuit board contacts extending downwardly and through the housing. The electrical contacts are designed and are loaded within the cavities in such a manner that electrical arcing between adjacent contacts is eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2001Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Tyco Electronics CorporationInventors: John M. Patent number: 5503569Abstract: A latching mechanism for releasably locking the electrical contacts of an electrical connector in the connector housing is disclosed. Each contact is surrounded by a collet having inwardly extending protrusions that are in depressions formed in the outer surfaces of the contacts. A retaining member is movable to a locked position where it surrounds each of the collets to prevent expansion thereof thereby locking the contacts in place within the housing. The retaining member is also movable to an unlocked position away from the collets, which allows expansion of a collet so that a damaged contact can be removed by simply pulling it out of the housing. A latching mechanism is provided to move the retaining member to its locked and unlocked positions from outside of the connector without disassembly thereof.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1993Date of Patent: April 2, 1996Assignee: The Whitaker CorporationInventors: John P. Patent number: 4762505Abstract: A receptacle assembly (24) having spring biased latches (136) with catches (155) extending normal to a planar portion thereof. Latches (136) extend beyond the receptacle assembly (24) to be received and operate in channels (170) in header assembly (22). Catches ride up a ramp (172) in the channel (170) further biasing the latches (136) then seat in detent (176). Upon a sufficient force (018) being transferred by a cable (102) to the receptacle assembly (24), catch (155) pivotally deforms from its normal position, catch (155) slides along a surface (174, 178) of the channel (170) out of detent (176) then the receptacle and header assemblies (24,22) are pulled apart.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1987Date of Patent: August 9, 1988Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventors: John C.
