Patent number: 11313470Abstract: A contamination guard for a machine is disclosed herein. The contamination guard includes an inner ring, a first annulus, a second annulus, and an impeller. The impeller is configured to promote intake of nearby air with contamination. The first annulus and second annulus form a passage that is configured to sling away air with contamination during operation of the machine.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 2020Date of Patent: April 26, 2022Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: John M. Mashak

Publication number: 20210254766Abstract: In one aspect, an unloaded annular flexible seal is provided to receive an end of a conduit and to provide a seal between the conduit and a flange of a machine. The seal has a base having an inner surface, an upper surface, an outer surface, and a lower surface, and a leg having an inner surface, an upper surface extending from the inner surface of the base, an outer surface extending from the lower surface of the base, and a lower surface. A surface area of the outer surface of the leg is greater than a surface area of the lower surface of the leg. In another aspect, the seal is included in a seal assembly that also includes an annular back-up member having an L-shaped cross section, including a back-up member base and a back-up member leg configured to sit in the groove of the flexible seal.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 13, 2020Publication date: August 19, 2021Applicant: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: John M. MASHAK, Trevor PEASE, Adam P. BERRY, Hong LIAN, Gregory O. POTTS

Patent number: 10934970Abstract: A sealing device may comprise: a flange that extends perpendicularly relative to a central axis of first portion; an inner cylindrical portion having an engaging surface, and a protruding portion extending between the flange and the inner cylindrical portion; a rigid body component; and an elastic component having a main oil lip and an excluder lip, wherein the main oil lip is proximate to or in contact with the flange at a first location, and wherein a the excluder lip contacts the inner cylindrical portion; wherein a gap is defined by surfaces of the first portion and the elastic component between the first location and the second location, and wherein, when the sealing device is installed in a bore so that the engaging surface is fixedly connected to the shaft and a machine is operated so that the shaft rotates, the volume of the gap changes by less than 10%.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2018Date of Patent: March 2, 2021Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: John M. Mashak, Keith Harmeyer

Patent number: 10844960Abstract: A shaft seal for disposition between a shaft mounted for rotation and a bore includes a radial shaft-sealing sleeve assembly rotatably mounted with an outer carrier assembly. The radial shaft-sealing sleeve assembly includes a radial shaft-sealing sleeve and a first contact exclusion lip. The outer carrier assembly includes an outer carrier with a molded seal along having an outer radial section of the outer carrier and an elongated molded seal lip extending into a chamber formed between the radial shaft-sealing sleeve and the outer carrier, a second contact exclusion lip, and a main pumping lip. The first contact exclusion lip forming a dynamic seal against the outer carrier, and the second contact exclusion lip and main pumping lip forming dynamic seals against the radial shaft-sealing sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2018Date of Patent: November 24, 2020Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Christian Sabotta, John M. Mashak, Scott Rice, Tyler J. Davis, Nicholas O'Connor
