Abstract: An optical encoder is disclosed, the optical encoder generally including an encoder framework, a light source for emitting light, said light source mounted to the encoder framework, a light detector attached to the encoder framework and disposed to receive light emitted from the light source, a light interruption screen with opaque regions and transparent regions, the opaque regions and transparent regions being movably positioned between the light source and the light detector such that movement of the opaque regions interrupts the light emitted from the light source to the light detector, and further wherein the light source is mounted to the encoder framework transverse such that the light is emitted at an angle from the axis of the rotating member.
