The controller maintains a remote connection with each media stream device, monitoring operational status and modifying the map as required in response to conditions. Each media stream device manages its own remote peer connections with other media stream devices by, e.g., initiating a peer connection once both the destination node and the desired stream are available. For simplicity and rapid response to changing status conditions, the map may include node groups comprising various types of nodes, such as aggregation groups, distribution groups, and link groups. Media stream devices may autonomously alter connections within groups as necessary to maintain connections.
