Patent number: 7227481Abstract: A multi-bit sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC) has a single-ended input for receiving an analog input signal. A multi-bit feedback current digital-to-analog converter (IDAC) generates a multi-level feedback current depending on a multibit digital feedback signal from a Flash ADC. The feedback current is summed with the input signal with the feedback current. The summed signal is integrated on a continuous-time basis. The IDAC is selectively connectable to the summing node via a first path and a second path. The first path transmits current from the IDAC to the summing node with a first polarity and the second path transmits current from the IDAC to the summing node with an inverted polarity. This can reduce flicker noise and can allow the converter to operate without any mid-scale biasing current sources.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2005Date of Patent: June 5, 2007Assignee: Analog Devices, Inc.Inventors: Maria del Mar Chamarro Marti, Paul John Morrow

Patent number: 7205920Abstract: A sigma-delta digital-to-analog converter comprises a current digital-to-analog converter (IDAC) stage which generates a current depending on an input digital signal. An output current-to-voltage converter converts the generated signal to a voltage on a continuous-time basis. The amplifier used in the output current-to-voltage converter is chopper-stabilized. The converter can be single bit or multi-bit. The IDAC stage can be implemented with a pair of branches, a first branch comprising a first biasing current source and a second branch comprising a second biasing current source. The biasing current sources can be chopper-stabilized by connecting the bias current sources to the output current-to-voltage converter by a set of switches. The switches connect the biasing current sources to the output current-to-voltage converter in a first configuration and a second, reversed, configuration. This modulates flicker noise contributed by the bias current sources to the chopping frequency.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2005Date of Patent: April 17, 2007Assignee: Analog Devices, Inc.Inventors: Paul John Morrow, Maria del Mar Chamarro Marti, Colin G. Patent number: 7193545Abstract: A multi-bit continuous-time sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC) has a differential input stage which receives an analog input signal current. A multi-bit feedback current digital-to-analog converter (IDAC) generates a multi-level feedback current depending on a digital feedback signal from a flash ADC. An integrator has a differential input that integrates the difference of the generated current by the multi-bit IDAC and the input signal current on a continuous-time basis. The input stage further comprises a first biasing current source and a second biasing current source which bias the input stage in a mid-scale condition. A first summing node connects to the first differential input line, a first differential input of the integrator and the first output branch. A second summing node connects to the second differential input line, a second differential input of the integrator and the second output branch.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2005Date of Patent: March 20, 2007Assignee: Analog Devices, Inc.Inventors: Paul John Morrow, Maria del Mar Chamarro Marti, Colin G. Patent number: 5946430Abstract: A device for adding and/or dropping a signal to a transmission line. First and second optical circulators are connected by at least one switchable grating reflector, whereby a grating reflector can be switched into or out of the connecting path between the two circulators. A plurality of optical signals, each centered about a different wavelength, is coupled to a first port of the first circulator; these signals appear at the second port thereof. If a grating reflector capable of reflecting .lambda..sub.i is switched into the circuit, the signal centered about .lambda..sub.i propagates from the second port of the first circulator and reflects from the grating reflector back into the second port and out of the third port. The remainder of the input signals that are not reflected by grating reflectors propagate into the first port and from the second port of the second circulator as an output thereof. Also, a signal at wavelength .lambda..sub.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1997Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Corning IncorporatedInventors: Alan John Morrow, Richard Roth

Patent number: 5852615Abstract: A method and apparatus for programming a device, such as a universal remote control unit, using a light source, such as a CRT computer monitor coupled to a conventional personal computer. A unidirectional flow of data from the transmitter is used to configure to the receiver. Specifically, a method is provided for synchronizing the baud rates and bytes-per-frame of the receiver and the transmitter. The receiver baud rate is selected based on a "55 hex" synchronization signal received from the transmitter. The receiver measures a synchronization parameter to determine the exact baud rate of the transmitter, to which the receiver synchronizes. Thus, transmitter-to-transmitter baud rate differences, such as those caused by design differences and manufacturing tolerances, do not limit the rate at which data may be transmitted from a particular transmitter to a particular receiver. A method is also provided for verifying the integrity of data received at the receiver.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1996Date of Patent: December 22, 1998Assignee: Microsoft Corp.Inventors: David L. Holo, Alfred L. Schumer, John Morrow

Patent number: 5511519Abstract: An air inlet control system for a carburetor of an internal combustion engine. The system includes a magnet, an air inlet valve, and a temperature controlled limiter. The magnet is used to automatically attract the air inlet valve towards a fully closed position. The temperature controlled limiter limits the range of movement of the air inlet valve based upon the temperature of the engine. The limiter limits the open position of the valve to a position less than fully open when the engine is cold and, limits the closed position of the valve to a position less than fully closed when the engine is hot.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1994Date of Patent: April 30, 1996Assignee: Homelite, Inc.Inventors: Christopher L. Watson, John A. Morrow
