  • Patent number: 8702830
Abstract: A filtering apparatus having a plurality of passages made up of juxtaposed longitudinally extending channels. The passages are axially divided by a porous filtering media extending across the channels whereby the channels fluidly communicate through the porous filtering media. A pressure differential is created across the filtering media by restricting flow through an end of each channel, with each restriction being at an opposite end from that of the other channel. As flow restriction rather than outright blocking is used, some flow is possible along each passage directly along the channels even if the channels lose the ability to fluidly communicate through clogging of the filtering media.

  • Publication number: 20060160698
Abstract: A catalyst substrate support is provided which has a corrugated foil honeycomb matrix having an axis and defining a plurality of passages therethrough which are generally parallel to the axis and extend between opposite end faces of the matrix. A peripheral mantle extends about an outer perimeter of the matrix. The peripheral mantle has inwardly extending flanges which extend across an outer periphery of the opposite end faces to cover outermost of the passages and restrict fluid flow between the peripheral mantle and the matrix. The outer perimeter of the matrix and the peripheral mantle may be spaced apart to define a gap for accommodating differential thermal expansions of the matrix and the peripheral mantle, the gap being smaller than a height of the inwardly extending flanges. The catalyst substrate support may have at least one cross member extending across and secured to each of the opposite end faces of the matrix.

  • Publication number: 20060159597
Abstract: An arrangement is provided for sealing a catalyst substrate in a catalytic converter housing wherein the housing has sidewalls defining a catalyst chamber, an inlet opening upstream of the catalyst chamber and an outlet opening downstream of the catalyst chamber. The inlet and outlet openings provide a fluid flow path through the housing which further has a lateral access port for installation and removal of a catalyst substrate in the catalyst chamber without axial separation of the catalyst chamber. A peripheral mantle is provided about the substrate. The peripheral mantle has first and second spaced-apart inwardly extending walls to either side of the substrate. The housing has an inwardly facing sealing surface facing one of the inwardly extending walls.
