Because a user may use one or more instances of a particular application or multiple applications at once, application windows are useful tools for organizing items stored in electronic devices and using features provided by various applications. A user may need to manipulate, organize, configure and/or resize application windows. Some methods for manipulating, organizing, configuring and/or resizing application windows require a sequence of user inputs that navigate in a menu system. For example, with these methods, a user may need to select a user interface object in display a menu and/or perform one or more actions on the selected user interface object associated with one or more application windows. The various methods disclosed herein streamline manipulating, organizing, configuring and/or resizing application windows.

The first window and second window are moved in accordance with the second window-movement request such that the spatial relationship is maintained. A third window-movement request is received. A dock is generated for display in a user interface, the dock comprising a region of the user interface in which one or more icons are presented. An input is received for selecting an icon presented in the dock, the icon associated with an original position in the user interface. A visual indicator of a particular distance to drag the icon before the icon will be removed from the dock is generated for display. A second input for releasing the icon at a second position in the user interface is received. The icon is removed from the dock if a distance between the second position and the original position is within a predefined range of the particular distance.

Abstract: User interfaces for multiple display regions are described. One embodiment provides an array of non-overlapping windows that are created from a set of overlapping windows, and a user can select one of the non-overlapping windows to obtain an enlarged view of that selected window while keeping the other windows in their non-overlapping state. In one embodiment, the array of non-overlapping windows can include minimized windows or windows in other virtual desktops (e.g. windows in other “Spaces”) or both. In one embodiment, only windows of a selected application are shown in non-overlapping mode while opened windows of other applications are not shown.
