    Abstract: The present invention can be employed with any power supply circuit where it is desirable to employ a ratio adaptive, gated oscillator based step up switching regulator with a selectable duty cycle. By selecting a particular value for a capacitor coupled between the regulator's Frequency and Switch pins, a user can optimize the regulator's duty cycle for a particular application. Also, by adding a resistor in series with the capacitor, a time constant is created that limits the total charge transfer from taking place at high frequencies more than it does at low frequencies. Additionally, by selecting particular values for the capacitor and resistor, the user can adjust the duty cycle for an application as a function of the battery voltage and output voltage.

The handset is arranged so that it can be cradled within a base unit and recharged while the handset is face-up.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method for detecting a call progress tone on a pair of telephone conductors (the telephone line). The level of energy stored in an energy storage device is continually checked. When the level of energy of the energy storage device is below a threshold, the system couples the telephone line to an off-hook impedance. While coupled to the telephone line, the system charges the energy storage device using current drawn from the telephone line, and the system detects the presence of the call progress tone on the telephone line.

    Abstract: A digitizer uses acoustic waves originating from a stylus to determine the position of the stylus on a plate. The acoustic waves are introduced into the plate from the tip of the stylus and are detected by a plurality of detectors positioned at various points along the periphery of the plate. By sensing differences in the arrival times of the acoustic waves at the detectors, a microprocessor calculates the position of the stylus. In a preferred embodiment using a non-tethered stylus, four detectors are positioned at the corners of a rectangle, and the time differences are used as addresses in a lookup table, which is programmed to contain x and y coordinates corresponding to the time differences, Different embodiments may detect only the "fast" symmetrical waves or only the "slow" antisymmetrical waves generated in the plate, or may use the arrival times of both types of waves to determine the stylus position.

Also included is the capability to turn on clock signals based upon demand. The low power management system also includes the capability to turn on the computer upon a press of a key on the computer keyboard. The low power management system monitors software application programs for keyboard activity so as to turn off the microprocessor in the computer in response to a loop looking for a keypress and certain other loops which can be monitored without use of the microprocessor.

    Abstract: A structure and method for controlling a liquid crystal display takes advantage of the sharp reflectance change over a small voltage change for new liquid crystal display materials, applying ON and OFF pixel voltages very close to the transition voltage of the liquid crystal material and regulating the applied voltage to remain reliably near and on the desired side of this transition voltage. Also, a net zero DC voltage across pixels of the crystal is maintained using a switching mode close to half the frequency of prior art modes. Driving voltages are provided by a switching regulator rather than the prior art voltage divider, resulting in a significant reduction in operating power. The preferred switching regulator generates only three additional voltages for driving rows and columns of the display, in contrast to the five generated voltages of the prior art voltage divider.
