  • Patent number: 5284637
Abstract: Apparatus and process to achieve improved performance with a dry scrubbing flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system. The process consists of injecting sorbent slurry into flue gas from fossil fuel combustion, cooling the flue gas containing the injected slurry and collecting the slurry solids, reaction products, and fly ash in a filter. The apparatus comprises means for cooling the flue gas between the slurry injecting means and the filter.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 26, 1991
Date of Patent: February 8, 1994
    Assignee: Southern Research Institute
Inventors: Randy L. Merritt, Larry G. Felix, John P. Gooch
  • Patent number: 5011516
Abstract: A method is provided for improving the electrostatic precipitation of particulates, i.e., from combustion gases by withdrawing part of the flue gases, catalytically converting the SO.sub.2 to SO.sub.3 and reinjecting it into the main flue stream.

  • Patent number: 4872887
Abstract: A method is provided for enhancing the efficiency of fly ash collection in an electrostatic precipitator by lowering the resistivity of the fly ash particles in the flue gas, comprising the steps of introducing an aqueous solution of ammonium sulfate or ammonium bisulfate into a slipstream of hot flue gas or hot combustion air in a chamber external to the main flue gas duct wherein thermal decomposition is effected, removing the NH.sub.3 decomposition product by catalytic oxidation to increase the effectiveness of the SO.sub.3 decomposition product, and then distributing the SO.sub.3 decomposition product into the main flue gas stream exiting from the air preheater at a point upstream from the electrostatic precipitator.
