  • Publication number: 20080158719
Abstract: A linear tape drive system includes a tape having a path direction, a data track having data transitions at an azimuthal orientation relative to the path direction, and a servo track having servo positioning transitions. A linear tape drive module is configured to read and/or write to the data track at the azimuthal orientation and read the servo positioning transitions.

  • Patent number: 7382585
Abstract: A magnetic head for writing data to and reading data from a magnetic recording medium includes an inductive-type writer, an anisotropic magneto-resistive (AMR) reader, and a giant magneto-resistive (GMR) reader. The AMR reader is used to read data from “high magnetic flux” recording mediums which have been recorded for use with AMR sensors. The GMR reader is used to read data from “low magnetic flux” recording mediums which have been recorded for use with GMR sensors. As such, the magnetic head provides for backward compatibility between the previously prevalent “high magnetic flux” recording mediums and the expected future prevalent “low magnetic flux” recording mediums. The magnetic head may be configured such that the writer and the AMR and GMR readers share sensor shields in various configurations in order to carry out their writing and reading functions.

  • Patent number: 7190539
Abstract: A heat-assisted magnetic recorder for magnetically recording information onto a recording medium having a given recording coercive field includes an electron beam generator and a magnetic recording head. The electron beam generator directs an electron beam onto the recording medium in order to locally heat a portion of the recording medium such that the heated recording medium portion has a recording coercive field lower than the given recording coercive field. The magnetic recording head generates a magnetic recording field having an intensity greater than the recording coercive field of the heated recording medium portion in order to magnetically record information onto the heated recording medium portion. The electron beam generator includes a plurality of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in nanoholes of an anodic alumina template for generating the electron beam. A heat-assisted magnetic recording method is associated with the heat-assisted magnetic recorder.

  • Patent number: 7118814
Abstract: An apparatus and method for step-stabilization of giant magnetoresistive (GMR) based read heads are provided. With the apparatus and method, gratings or periodic structures are generated in the underlayer of the magnetoresistive (MR) sensor stack and the edges, or “steps”, in these structures are the magnetically active features. These “steps” are oriented approximately parallel to the desired bias direction and provide a restoring force towards the bias direction for any perturbations, whether intrinsic or extrinsic. In the case of a GMR sensor, where the easy axis is parallel to the permanent magnet set direction, these stabilizer steps are oriented parallel to the magnetization direction of the permanent magnets.

  • Patent number: 6969021
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for reducing tape media edge damage in data regions and controlling the position of the tape media in a passive manner. A curved tape guide surface of a tape guide roller controls tape media edge damage by restoring the tape media to a properly aligned position on a tape guide roller by using tape guide rollers with curved edge stops that exert a force to the tape media during a lateral shift. As the tape moves around the roller, the restoring force exerted by the curved portion of the tape guide roller on the tape during any lateral shift restores the tape to a centered position. Keeping the tape media in a centered position reduces tape edge wear, lessens degradation of the integrity of the tape and increases the useful lifetime of the tape.
