    Abstract: The alternative counter top is a compactable and expandable surface to be placed over an existing stove top. The alternative counter top is rectangular in shape and comprises a series of elongate slats which are hinged together to create accordion folds when retracted, and mounted on top of the back of an existing stove. When expanded, the slats create usable counter space. The elongate edges of the slats are convex on one side and concave on the opposite side to prevent spillage between the slats when expanded.
