  • Patent number: 8955362
Abstract: An apparatus (50) for and method of manufacturing helically wound tubular structures (116) includes a rotating faceplate (74) upon which are mounted a plurality of diameter defining rollers (78) which, in operation, cause a strip material (80) to be plastically deformed into a helical winding which may be lain down in abutting or self-overlapping relationship to form said tubular structure (116).

  • Patent number: 7971610
Abstract: A tubular body comprises an inner hollow core and an outer casing of one or more strips of self mechanically inter-engaging helically wound material having a higher yield strength than that of the core material. Also provided is a method of forming the tubular body comprising the steps of winding the outer core onto the inner core and an end connector for use with said tubular body when said body is provided with helically extending detents on an outer surface thereof.

  • Publication number: 20110030834
Abstract: The present invention provides a multi-layered corrugated cylindrical tubular structure formed from a strip (10) of material having one edge reduced in diameter by a step portion (16) and reduced in length by corrugations (18). The strip may be formed on a forming arrangement comprising confronting corrugating rollers (74, 76) having regions formed with corrugating undulations of differing height and an un-corrugated portion.

  • Publication number: 20110000573
Abstract: The present invention provides a strip and a tubular article formed from said strip which may, for example, be used in the oil and gas industry for transporting fluids which may be volatile fluids or corrosive fluids and which may be at elevated temperatures and/or pressure. The strip includes a plurality of combined step (joggle) and rib arrangements. In the finished assembled article, the strip is wound in helically self-overlapping relationship such as to allow corresponding step portions to sit one within the other. The step effectively provides the dual function of a joggle and a rib as known in the art and does so in a manner that reduces the forming stresses in the material and increases the strength of the final article.

  • Publication number: 20100003440
Abstract: The present invention provides a tubular member 10 and method of forming the same in which the tubular member 10 comprises one or more strips of self overlapping helically wound material 12 having corrugations with radially adjacent curves sharing the same origin of bend radius O formed therein and including a step portion or depression 22 which allows the edges 14, 16 of each strip to lie within the profile of the combined strips. The structure is manufactured by helically winding said strip 12 in self overlapping manner such as to cause the edges 14, 16 to sit within the depression 22 whilst providing a multi-layer structure.

  • Patent number: 5837083
Abstract: A method of forming a hollow elongated or tubular body consisting of the steps of winding one or more strips of material in self-overlapping fashion to produce a multi-layer tubular structure, the or each strip prior to winding being pre-formed to provide a transverse cross-section having at least one step which, in each convolution of the strip accommodates the overlapping portion of the next convolution.
