Patent number: 7126445Abstract: An arc-fault detecting circuit-breaker system is used in conjunction with a protected electrical circuit whose current flow is to be interrupted upon the occurrence of an overcurrent fault or an arc fault. The arc-fault detecting circuit breaker system includes a normally closed circuit breaker, an arc-fault detector of the occurrence of an arc fault in the protected electrical circuit, and a circuit-breaker activating element operable responsive to the detector. The circuit-breaker activating element opens the circuit breaker in the event that the detector detects an arc fault in the protected electrical circuit. A status indicator structure, preferably in the form of a two-part pop-up button, has a first status indicator element which indicates the opening of the circuit breaker due to the overcurrent fault, and a second status indicator element which indicates the opening of the circuit breaker due to the arc fault.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2003Date of Patent: October 24, 2006Assignee: Raytheon CompanyInventors: Roy P. McMahon, John R. Archer

Patent number: 6532140Abstract: An arc-fault detecting circuit-breaker system includes a normally closed line circuit breaker in series with a protected electrical circuit element whose current flow is to be interrupted upon the occurrence of an arc fault. A detector senses the rate of change with time of the current flow in the protected electrical circuit element. A silicon-controlled rectifier has a gate of the silicon-controlled rectifier in electrical communication with a detector output signal of the detector. The silicon-controlled rectifier shorts the current flow in the protected electrical circuit element in the event that the detector output signals that the rate of change of current with time in the protected electrical circuit element is in excess of a permitted maximum rate-of-change value, thereby activating the line circuit breaker.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2000Date of Patent: March 11, 2003Assignee: Raytheon CompanyInventors: Roy P. Patent number: 5638657Abstract: A system and method for automatically feeding, inspecting and diverting tablets for continuous filling of tablet containers includes a tablet conveyor system which divides the tablets in a plurality of tablet streams for inspection by color, size and shape. Following the tablet inspection, each tablet passes through a tablet diverter which diverts the tablets to a recycle stream, reject stream or one of two bottle filling positions based upon instruction from the inspection. A bottle conveyor system is provided which feeds empty bottles into a bottle escapement mechanism which positions the empty bottles for filling. Filled bottles are moved from the bottle escapement mechanism to an exit conveyor. The entire system is computer controlled by various control mechanisms to enable the system to be fully operational without operator assistance.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1996Date of Patent: June 17, 1997Assignee: Merck & Co., Inc.Inventors: John R. Archer, David E. Cumpstey, Richard H. Gray, Stephen Owen

Patent number: 4773284Abstract: Apparatus for constructing a press knife for cutting out sheet material such as leather, wherein machine instructions are generated containing data relating to a desired configuration of the press knife for cutting out a particular profile, the machine instructions are supplied to a bending device (36, 38, 40) and to a strip material feed device (62), the feed device supplies the strip material to the bending device so the bends are introduced into the strip material in accordance with the machine instructions, the formed strip material then being cut off from the stock and assembled and fixed to form the desired knife configuration, preferably being fixed around a support plate which is produced by a forming device (30) fed with machine instructions derived from the same source (12)as those controlling the bending and feeding devices.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Assignee: Busm Co., Ltd.Inventors: John R. Archer, Peter F. Ross

Patent number: 4627255Abstract: In a bending machine, metal strip (42) is bent by a sequence of steps including longitudinal advance of the strip (42) alternating with bending of the strip by a movable tool (18) which engages and deflects the strip when the latter is restrained against longitudinal movement. Provision is made for checking or inspecting the permanent angular deformation of each bend applied to the strip, to take account of the tendency of the metal strip to spring back after bending. Compensation for spring-back is achieved by use of a previously described characteristic relating displacement of the bending tool to the resultant permanent angle of bend applied to the strip. Further compensation is provided to remove an error which can arise if the bending tool is movable along a line of action spaced from the point of bending of the strip by an amount greater than the incremental advance of the strip.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1984Date of Patent: December 9, 1986Assignee: USM CorporationInventors: John R. Patent number: 4451807Abstract: A television receiver deflection yoke mounted on a kinescope incorporates toroidally wound vertical deflection coils which generate stray fields that undesirably interact with components of adjacent receivers or video monitors. The deflection yoke incorporates magnetically permeable field forming members which utilize the stray field flux to form an electromagnetic field at the front of the yoke to aid in side pincushion distortion correction. The field forming members comprise a flux gathering portion which is located within the region of the stray field and follows the contour of the yoke core. The flux gathering portions extend along substantially the entire length of the vertical coils and are curved to encompass a significant portion of the external surface of the core in order to reduce the undesirable effects of the stray field and to form a strong pincushion distortion correcting field.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1983Date of Patent: May 29, 1984Assignee: RCA CorporationInventors: Kenneth W. McGlashan, John R. Archer

Patent number: 4369418Abstract: In a color television display system comprising a kinescope having in-line electron beams and a deflection yoke having saddle horizontal and toroidal vertical windings, a correcting apparatus comprises a magnetically permeable ring disposed at the rear of the yoke around the neck of the kinescope. Slots are formed into the ring at the top and bottom, separating it into two semi-circular segments. External flux from the deflection yoke horizontal and vertical coils is shunted into the permeable corrector and away from the focus region of the kinescope electron gun assembly, thereby improving beam focus and reducing vertical coma error. The slots formed in the ring prevent excessive flux from being shunted into the corrector which otherwise would undesirably reduce the amount of beam scan, and require a compensating increase in deflection power.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1982Date of Patent: January 18, 1983Assignee: RCA CorporationInventor: John R.
