  • Patent number: 4260373
Abstract: A system for drying and preheating small metallic particles such as chips, turnings, borings and the like to remove volatiles therefrom which includes a dryer working in conjunction with a briquetting press. The dryer includes a drying and preliminary combustion chamber includng a revolving drum therein through which the chips pass. The drying and preliminary combustion is heated and is atmospherically sealed and operated with a reducing atmosphere. The volatiles driven from the metallic particles are passed to a combustion completion chamber which is maintained at a temperature sufficient to burn the combustibles and into which air is injected to complete the combustion. The hot metallic particles are thermally insulated and sealed from the atmosphere while being conveyed from the drying and preliminary combustion chamber to the briquetting press where they are compressed into briquettes for subsequent introduction into induction furnaces and the like.

  • Patent number: 4162891
Abstract: A scrap preheating system in which scrap metal is preheated and contaminants such as grease removed therefrom by direct impingement of flames upon the scrap. The system includes a tunnel like preheater hood through which a conveyor passes conveying the scrap. The preheater hood includes parallel side walls positioned adjacent the conveyor and a roof assembly in which are positioned a plurality of burners for directing flames upon the scrap. The roof assembly of the preheater hood is formed into a plurality of substantially identical modular roof assemblies which are carried by the side walls and are positioned in side by side relationship along the side walls transverse to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4083675
Abstract: A scrap preheating system of the type employing a conveyor upon which the scrap is placed, an elongate burner hood surrounding the conveyor and burners within the hood which direct flames upon the scrap. The side walls of the burner hood include an elongate exhaust chamber and side wall ports between the exhaust chamber and the interior of the hood. An exhaust fan induces a negative pressure under the hood through the exhaust chambers which pulls the unburned hydrocarbons from under the hood through the side wall ports into the exhaust chamber. Additionally, air is drawn upwardly between the conveyor and side walls of the hood and through the side wall ports into the exhaust chambers wherein combustion is completed and pollution reduced. The length of hood and burner array exceeds the length of scrap material on the conveyor. The conveyor is periodically jogged during the preheating cycle to slightly advance and mix the scrap and only those burners positioned above the scrap are operated as it advances.
