Abstract: An apparatus for varying the tension on a drum head to change the pitch of the instrument during a performance. The apparatus may be configured to tension one drum or several drums simultaneously. The tensioning components of the apparatus are installed within the barrel of the drum and the apparatus is actuated by the performer using a control module which may incorporate a system for foot pedals, proximity switches, or photoelectric switches. The control module may be programmed to effect the alteration of drum pitch in variable increments and at variable speeds. The apparatus is electrically powered and is suitable for installation in any type of drum, including those with open-ended barrels.
