Abstract: A fused loop of an elongated material, such as a surgical suture, and apparatus for making the loop are described. Portions of one or more segments of elongated material may he fused in an ultrasonic welding process to form a welded joint. Multiple materials each with a different melting point may be used for one or more fibers within the elongated material The elongated material may include a sheath, which may be used to protect a core within the elongated material. A fused region of the fused loop may be formed when a material with a lower melting temperature, compared to one or more other materials in the elongated material, is caused to melt. A related ultrasonic welding apparatus may include a temperature sensor for control of the welding process.

Abstract: An on-line ride sharing system employs a dynamic database of geographical information in map form together with information that is input into the system by individual users and potential users of the system. An analysis program is integrated with the database to evaluate applications filed by users, and to present a user with a map display of origin and destination locations of potential ride sharing partners. A communication route is provided by the system between the user and potential partners to allow the parties to maintain anonymity and privacy so long as is desired.

Abstract: In a papermaking machine for making paper and paperboard products, a press belt, press roll cover, or long nip shoe press belt, is disclosed that has both a permanent microscale roughness and areas of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic nature which properties promote good sheet smoothness and printability, while allowing for excellent sheet release.

Abstract: Apparatus for registering one or more sheets in a registration position defined for example in a corner formed by two edge stops has a sheet support member and a tamping member that engage the edge or edges of the sheet or sheets on the support member. The tamping member is mounted on the end of an arm which is mounted for angular movement about a shaft. On movement of the arm the tamper moves so as to push the sheet(s) into the registration position. The tamping member includes a brush having bristles that engage the edge(s) of the sheet(s).

Abstract: A safety device to warn the pilot of a hang glider if take-off is attempted without the glider hook-up strap being connected to the pilot's harness includes two sensors arranged in series with an alarm. One of the sensors is arranged to close a circuit when the glider is positioned in a take-off attitude and the other sensor closes a circuit when the free end of the hook-up strap is disconnected from the pilot's harness. The alarm is activated when both circuits are closed.
