  • Patent number: 4243093
Abstract: A composite article and method of forming the same wherein an inner casting is separated from an outer casting by an insulative portion defining the pattern for the outer surface of the inner casting and the pattern for the inner surface of the outer casting. The insulative portion is captured between the castings to define a thermal barrier therebetween. The castings are formed by gasifying an expendable gasifiable pattern corresponding to the inner and outer castings, respectively. The patterns are assembled with the insulative portion of the article disposed therebetween and a mold is formed about the assembled patterns and insulative portion. Upon pouring of molten casting metal into the mold, the expendable patterns are gasified into the mold, permitting the inner and outer portions of the article to be cast about the insulative portion to form the desired final composite article.

  • Patent number: 4163827
Abstract: A method of making a filled tubular article for controlled insertion into a molten metal includes extruding a treating material through an apparatus to form an elongated core element and wrapping the core element in a protective casing. Preferably, the casing of the article includes a helically wrapped ribbon-like strip.

  • Patent number: 4055214
Abstract: A flash control molding is provided for use in association with a pattern for forming a casting cavity in a metal casting mold. The flash control molding includes an elongated strip of pliable material having a predetermined cross sectional configuration to define a thick portion for forming a flash control chamber in the mold, and a thin edge along one side of the thick portion to form a restricted opening between the flash control chamber and the casting cavity so that a casting subsequently produced in the mold is formed with controlled shaped flash which has a built-in fracture line immediately adjacent the casting proper, thereby making the flash easily and cleanly removable from the casting.

  • Patent number: 4040468
Abstract: An apparatus for introducing additives into molten metal being poured through a flow path and into a casting cavity of a casting mold includes a wire feed mechanism for feeding a wire of additive material into the molten metal in the flow path for erodibly mixing with the molten metal prior to its entry into the casting cavity. A device is provided for moving the wire feed mechanism relative to the casting mold between a feed position in which the end of the wire of additive material is disposed in the flow path and a second position in which the end of the wire is removed therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4036279
Abstract: A pouring chute is positioned with its discharge end disposed within an elongated hollow casting mold which is rotatably supported on a plurality of rollers. A molten metal is poured from a ladle into a receiving end of the pouring chute while the casting mold is rotating. A treating agent in wire form is fed by a wire feed mechanism along a guide member positioned adjacent the pouring chute and into the stream of molten metal flowing through the pouring chute adjacent the discharge end thereof for meltably intermixing with the molten metal. The wire feed mechanism and hence the feed rate of the wire is controlled in direct proportion to the flow rate of the molten metal through the pouring chute.

  • Patent number: 3991808
Abstract: An apparatus for the introduction of additives into a casting mold having an internal casting cavity which is fed molten metal through a controlled flow path formed in the mold with the apparatus continuously feeding a wire of additive material into the flow path within the mold for erodibly substantially completely mixing with the molten metal prior to its entry into the casting cavity.

  • Patent number: RE31972
Abstract: A stricture is formed between riser and cast article in a conventional metal mold casting process to facilitate clean removal of the riser after casting by interposing thin-walled frangible constriction means between riser cavity and casting cavity prior to pouring molten metal; the flow of metal into casting cavity is also regulated thereby.
