    Abstract: A die assembly for plastic pelletizing apparatus of the type including a cooling bath into which the plastic is extruded. The die assembly includes a heated main body having first and second oppositely disposed exterior faces connected by a plurality of relatively small extrusion passageways. A layer of thermal insulation material overlies the second face, and a cover member having an outer surface adapted to be exposed to the cooling bath is positioned over the thermal insulation material and joined to the main body. Wear resistant insert members formed from a material having a higher coefficient of thermal conductivity than the material from which the cover member is made extend from the outer surface of the cover member through the layer of insulation into the main body. Extrusion outlet orifices are formed through the insert members and define continuations of the extrusion passageways of the main body.

    Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the diameter of an object is disclosed. A rotatable wheel of known diameter capable of movement in three axes is contacted with an object capable of rotation. The wheel is attached to a shaft encoder which produces pulses as the wheel rotates. As the object is rotated, start and end reference marks are sensed and the pulses produced by the shaft encoder are counted. A microprocessor calculates the diameter of the object knowing the wheel diameter and counts per revolution and the counts per revolution of the object. The apparatus can be adapted to measure the internal or external diameter of smooth objects or the internal or external pitch diameter of threaded objects. The apparatus can also use a calibrated object to measure the diameter of a wheel of unknown diameter to allow the wheel to be used in later measurements.

    Abstract: A gage and method are disclosed for measuring the inside or outside diameter of a product at a selected distance from the end of the product. The gage has a pair of blocks slidable along a pair of parallel vertical guide rails. Each block has a bearing pad which can be positioned against the end of the product to be measured. An arm extends horizontally from each block and is slidably mounted in an aperture extending through the block. A contact depends vertically from the end of each arm. One contact is mounted on a vertically reciprocable dial indicator plunger. The contacts are first positioned horizontally and vertically using gage blocks which correspond to the specified diameter and distance from the end of the pipe. The gage is then positioned against the end of the product and the contacts are brought into contact with the surface of the product at diametrically opposed points thereon. The dial indicator displays the deviation of the actual diameter from the specified diameter.

    Abstract: An extrusion die of the type particularly suited for use in underwater pelletizing of polymeric materials. The die includes a die body having a forward end face with a plurality of extrusion ports passing therethrough terminating at the forward end face. A layer of insulating material is interposed between the forward end face at the area of the extrusion ports and a subplate which is constructed from the same material as the die body. The subplate is fixedly secured to the die body so as to form a substantially integral relationship therewith. A hardened facing construction is fixedly secured to the outer end face of the subplate. Both the facing and subplate allow communication therethrough with the extrusion ports. The insulating material retards or reduces heat transfer from the heated die body to the cooled facing during an extruding operation.

    Abstract: An indexable insert drill particularly suited for use in machining soft metals such as aluminum or the like. The drill includes an elongated body having a drilling portion with at least one groove extending axially along a portion thereof from the drilling portion end. In one embodiment, a generally triangular cutting insert is fixedly mounted in a receiving pocket included in the groove so that in cutting presentment, the insert cutting edge extends radially of the drilling portion from an innermost end area at the drilling portion longitudinal axis to an outermost end area outwardly of the drilling portion side wall. The cutting insert is configured so that the cutting edge will have neutral lead, neutral radial rake and positive axial rake when the insert is mounted in the receiving pocket. The receiving pocket includes a back tapered side wall defining an insert retaining area for conveniently capturing a side of the cutting insert.
