  • Patent number: 8633552
Abstract: Disclosed herein are MEMS resonator device designs and fabrication techniques that provide protection against electrostatic charge imbalances. In one aspect, a MEMS resonator device includes a substrate, an electrode including a first microstructure supported by the substrate, a resonant element including a second microstructure spaced from the first microstructure by a gap for resonant displacement of the second microstructure within the gap during operation, and a disabled shunt coupled to the electrode or the resonant element. The disabled shunt is disabled to enable the resonant displacement but otherwise configured to protect against damage from an electrostatic charge imbalance before the operation of the MEMS resonator device.

  • Patent number: 8635067
Abstract: Access is obtained to a large reference acoustic model for automatic speech recognition. The large reference acoustic model has L states modeled by L mixture models, and the large reference acoustic model has N components. A desired number of components Nc, less than N, to be used in a restructured acoustic model derived from the reference acoustic model, is identified. The desired number of components Nc is selected based on a computing environment in which the restructured acoustic model is to be deployed. The restructured acoustic model also has L states. For each given one of the L mixture models in the reference acoustic model, a merge sequence is built which records, for a given cost function, sequential mergers of pairs of the components associated with the given one of the mixture models. A portion of the Nc components is assigned to each of the L states in the restructured acoustic model.

  • Patent number: 8632230
Abstract: A deep submersible light may include a body defining a hollow interior and a solid state light source such as a plurality of high brightness LEDs mounted in the interior of the body. A transparent window may be mounted over the LEDs. The space between the transparent window and the LEDs may be filled with an optically transparent fluid, gel, or grease, which allows light to pass through and ambient water pressure to pass in, thus pressure compensating the LEDs by allowing them to see ambient water pressure. The transparent window may be mounted in the body for reciprocation in both a forward direction and a rearward direction to accommodate volumetric changes in the compensating fluid, gel, or grease caused by changes in temperature and water pressure as the manned or remotely piloted submarine travels from the sea surface to deep ocean depths.

  • Publication number: 20140018994
Abstract: Drive-control systems for personal-transportation vehicles can function as active driving aids that enable autonomous and semi-autonomous cooperative navigation of electric-powered wheelchairs (EPWs) and other vehicles both indoors, and in dynamic, outdoor environments. The systems can help to compensate for the loss of cognitive, perceptive, or motor function in the driver by interpreting the driver's intent and seeing out into the environment on the driver's behalf. The systems can incorporate intelligent sensing and drive-control means that work in concert with the driver to aid in negotiating changing terrain, avoiding obstacles/collisions, maintaining a straight trajectory, etc. In addition, the systems can be configured to facilitate higher-level path planning, and execution of non-linear routes of travel in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Publication number: 20140019724
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for performing aggregation operations across multiple threads that execute independently. Aggregation is specified as part of a barrier synchronization or barrier arrival instruction, where in addition to performing the barrier synchronization or arrival, the instruction aggregates (using reduction or scan operations) values supplied by each thread. When a thread executes the barrier aggregation instruction the thread contributes to a scan or reduction result, and waits to execute any more instructions until after all of the threads have executed the barrier aggregation instruction. A reduction result is communicated to each thread after all of the threads have executed the barrier aggregation instruction and a scan result is communicated to each thread as the barrier aggregation instruction is executed by the thread.

  • Publication number: 20140017277
Abstract: Novel methods and compositions for treating aged and environmentally damaged skin are disclosed which provide improvements in the skin's visual appearance, function and clinical/biophysical properties by activating at least one proteolytic enzyme in the skin's stratum corneum. The disclosed treatment methods involve topical application of a novel cosmetic composition containing a combination of a cationic surfactant such as N,N,-dimethyldodecyl amine oxide (DMDAO), an anionic surfactant such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), or monoalkyl phosphate (MAP) and a chelating agent such as ethylene diamine tetraacetate (EDTA) to stimulate a chronic increase in the replacement rate of the skin's stratum corneum by means of corneum protease activation. This chronic, low level stimulation is effective to induce repair and replacement of the stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis of the skin and improvements in the appearance, function, and anti-aging properties of the skin.

  • Patent number: 8631347
Abstract: A method and system for rendering electronic document objects is provided in which a style matrix holds potential attribute values, and attribute references are used to address values in the style matrix. A mix of attribute references and actual attribute values may be used to make some attributes theme- and application-specific, and others theme- and application-independent. Further, a method for rendering a gallery of potential styles is provided. Additionally, a method for associating a style matrix with an electronic document application is provided. Finally, a computer-readable medium for storing a computer-interpretable data structure that identifies a matrix of style attribute types and style attribute values is provided.

  • Patent number: 8631181
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system that validates message-signaled interrupts. During operation, the system receives a message-signaled interrupt from a requesting device. This message-signaled interrupt includes an interrupt vector that identifies an interrupt, and is accompanied by an identification tag that identifies the source of the interrupt. The system uses the interrupt vector to access a stored tag from a tracking mechanism that associates source devices with their assigned interrupt vector(s). The system then compares the identification tag and the stored tag to validate the message-signaled interrupt.
