    Abstract: Presented herein are techniques for indexing of nucleic acid, e.g., for use in conjunction with sequencing. The techniques include generating indexed nucleic acid fragments from an individual sample, whereby the index sequence incorporated into each index site of the nucleic acid fragment is selected from a plurality of distinguishable of index sequences and such that the population of generated nucleic acid fragments represents each index sequence from the plurality. In this manner, the generated indexed nucleic acid fragments from a single sample are indexed with a diverse mix of index sequences that reduce misassignment due to index read errors associated with low sequence diversity.

    Abstract: An apparatus for automatically supplying electrical components from a series of tubular holders held in a cassette to the magazine of an electrical component assembly machine. The apparatus is carried on a channel base movable from a position with the cassette over the workstation to a position with the cassette remote from the workstation. The components are released from the cassette down a chute to the workstation, the chute having a stop member releasable when the channel base is moved to prevent the release of components from the chute. A component presence reader is located in the chute and is disposed at an acute angle to the chute vertical axis to obtain an accurate reading of the presence or absence of a component in the chute.

    Abstract: A punch press comprising multi-station, progressive die tooling, for providing metal covers with easy-open closures, is fitted with a work transfer mechanism facilitating successive positioning of the covers, the tooling employing features thereof to precisely locate and align the covers in the respective stations. More especially, in addition to cover operating dies and work supporting members facilitating lateral accommodation and positioning of the covers to avoid unwanted deforming stress therein, correct vertical alignment of the tooling at successive stages to produce the closures is economically assured.

    Abstract: A novel method of making an easy-open can end closure for insuring better control over the integrity of the closure, especially in tougher sheet metal such as steel, comprises the steps, after forming and longitudinally scoring-to-fracture the closure, of (a) providing a swageable strip of the metal extending along an edge of the line of fracture and overlying that edge, and (b) then swaging and dilating that strip radially into more intimate overlapping relation to the line of fracture to cause it to tightly close.

    Abstract: A can having a closure defined at least in part by a rupturable weakening line is provided with a finger-movable tab-like tool for safely opening the closure. The tool is a sheet metal lever pivotally attached to a can end in which the closure is deflectible and preferably non-severable. A depressor portion of the lever is raised from its prone or inoperative position and, in part, twisted about 90.degree. to locate its pressure-directing beak adjacent to a point along the weakening line, whereupon downward finger pressure on the depressor portion disrupts the line and deflects the closure inwardly. The lever is so shaped that depression of the twistable portion is limited by engagement therewith of an edge of the opening thus barring finger entry into the can opening as a safety measure. The lever may be provided at its opposite end with a handle whereby, when the closure has been opened as explained, the lever may be swung to clear the depressed end portion substantially from the can opening.
