  • Patent number: 6640548
Abstract: A gas turbine (12) capable of combusting a low quality gaseous fuel having a ratio of flammability limits less than 2, or a heat value below 100 BTU/SCF. A high quality fuel is burned simultaneously with the low quality fuel to eliminate instability in the combustion flame. A sensor (46) is used to monitor at least one parameter of the flame indicative of instability. A controller (50) having the sensor signal (48) as input is programmed to control the relative flow rates of the low quality and high quality fuels. When instability is detected, the flow rate of high quality fuel is automatically increased in relation to the flow rate of low quality fuel to restore stability.

  • Patent number: 6642718
Abstract: An ignition system monitoring assembly for use in a combustion engine is disclosed. The assembly includes an igniter having at least one positioning guide with at least one transmittal member being maintained in a preferred orientation by one of the positioning guides. The transmittal member is in optical communication with a corresponding target region, and optical information about the target region is conveyed to the reception member via the transmittal member. The device allows real-time observation of optical characteristics of the target region. The target region may be the spark gap between the igniter electrodes, or other predetermined locations in optical communication with the transmittal member. The reception member may send an output signal to a processing member which, in turn, may produce a response to the output signal.

  • Patent number: 6490868
Abstract: A mounting device for mounting an optical sensor to a combustor basket of a combustion gas turbine engine includes a base, an alignment member, and a clamp. The base is mounted over an access hole formed in the combustor basket and is formed with a spherical socket. The alignment member carries the optical sensor and includes a ball that is adjustably received in the socket. During alignment of the alignment member, a laser or other directed light source is applied to the end of the optical sensor. The laser delivers a laser beam that shines out of the optical sensor and permits the alignment member and the optical sensor to be properly aligned. The clamp selectively applies a non-rotational clamping force to the ball of the alignment member to clamp the alignment member in a given orientation with respect to the base.
