    Abstract: A method for treating ischemic injury in a subject having an ischemic injury is disclosed. The method can include administering to the subject a composition comprising an effective amount of a Sigma receptor agonist to treat the ischemic injury in the subject. The composition can be administered at least about 6 hours after occurrence of the ischemic injury, and administration of the composition can stimulate release of brain-derived neurotropic factor from neurons and/or to reduce one or more neurological deficits and/or symptoms.
