  • Patent number: 8122773
Abstract: The present invention pertains to systems and methods for measuring power output, as in an athletic activity such as cycling. One embodiment relates to a force sensing device configured to be mounted on the bottom surface of a shoe as part of a mechanical linkage through which force is exerted. For cycling, the force sensor is mounted on the bottom surface of a cycling shoe and fitted with a cleat that interlockingly engages a bicycle pedal. To measure both positive and negative pressures on the pedal, the force sensor is pre-stressed with a compressive load to an intermediate point in its dynamic range. Strains that further compress or decompress the force sensor can thus be measured. The computing module mathematically converts the measured pressures, positive and negative, to a measurement of total power exerted by the rider. In addition, the computing module may utilize cyclical regularities in the signal to compute the rider's cadence (pedal revolutions per unit of time).

  • Patent number: 5660469
Abstract: A cover unit for an industrial food mixer includes two clamshell-like covers that are hingeably mounted at the proximal ends thereof on the mixer to move in a plane that is parallel to the plane containing the top rim of the bowl in which mixing is being carried out. A splash rib is dependently mounted on each cover as is a splash edge. The splash rib and edge are in the forms of compound curves, and an arcuate cutout on one edge of each cover matches with the cutout on the other cover to define an opening through which beater or agitator elements of the mixer extend into the mixing bowl. The covers move between an open condition uncovering the bowl and a closed condition covering the bowl. A lock mechanism is used to maintain the covers in the locked condition.

  • Patent number: 5648980
Abstract: An excitation system for a gas laser featuring a multiplicity of gain channels uses a resonant cavity to provide broad band RF power division and impedance matching to the multiplicity of gain channels. Integral anode and grid resonant tank circuits featuring positive feedback may be employed to provide a self-excited power oscillator having a very high power capability with good efficiency at low cost. A smaller and higher frequency multi-channel excitation system fabricated from stripline resonator elements may be used for driving small scale multi-channel lasers. A common optical extraction system features either a stable, an unstable, or a hybrid optical cavity mode, with phase-locked or non-phase locked output performance, achieved via external or self-injection.
