    Abstract: An alarm Abstract is provided for a bathtub and includes a method for attaching to a wall of the bathtub, one being a suction cup. A float assembly is supported by the alarm housing to engage the alarm system. To use the alarm apparatus of the invention in a bathtub, one of the three attachment methods is used to secure the housing to the wall of the bathtub. The float is adjusted to the desired height. Water is added to the bathtub, which turns a waterwheel, and when the water level lifts the float assembly a sufficient amount, the alarm system is activated and sounds a warning alarm. The alarm system includes a waterwheel that's is spinning, a thin flat plastic bar that is attached to the float. The float raises the thin plastic bar into the waterwheel thus making a loud clicking sound.

    Abstract: To identify molecular determinants of lytic bone disease in multiple myeloma, the expression profiles of ˜12,000 genes in CD138-enriched plasma cells from newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients exhibiting no radiological evidence of lytic lesions (n=28) were compared to those with ?3 lytic lesions (n=47). Two secreted WNT signaling antagonists, soluble frizzled related protein 3 (SFRP-3/FRZB) and the human homologue of Dickkopf-1 (DKK1), were expressed in 40 of 47 with lytic bone lesions, but only 16 of 28 lacking bone lesions (P<0.05). DKK1 and FRZB were not expressed in plasma cells from 45 normal bone marrow donors or 10 Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, a related plasma cells malignancy that lacks bone disease. These data indicate that these factors are important mediators of multiple myeloma bone disease, and inhibitors of these proteins may be used to block bone disease reduce tumor burden in multiple myeloma and to block bone disease.

    Abstract: The present invention describes selective cell growth inhibition of myeloma cells by ellipticine derivatives, 9-methoxy ellipticine and 9-dimethyl amino-ethoxy ellipticine. The cell growth inhibition efficacy was highest for 9-dimethyl amino-ethoxy ellipticine among the ellipcitine derivatives tested. The cell toxicity of 9-dimethyl amino-ethoxy ellipticine was selective for myeloma cells and did not kill normal cells in the effective antineoplastic dose range. 9-dimethyl amino-ethoxy ellipticine was superior to existing antimyeloma drugs, Adriamycin® and Etoposide in eliciting early and better cell growth inhibition response.

    Abstract: Gene expression profiling is a powerful tool that has varied utility. It enables classification of multiple myeloma into subtypes and identifing genes directly involved in disease pathogensis and clinical manifestation. The present invention used gene expression profiling in large uniformly treated population of patients with myeloma to identify genes associated with poor prognosis. It also demonstrated that over-expression of CKS1B gene, mainly due to gene amplification that was determined by Fluorescent in-situ hybridization to impart a poor prognosis in multiple myleoma. It is further contemplated that therapeutic strategies that directly target CKS1B or related pathways may represent novel, and more specific means of treating high risk myeloma and may prevent its secondary evolution.

    Abstract: Gene expression profiling reveals four distinct subgroups of multiple myeloma that have significant correlation with various clinical characteristics. Diagnosis for multiple myeloma (and possibly monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance) based on differential expression of 14 genes, as well as prognosis for the four subgroups of multiple myeloma based on the expression of 24 genes are established. A 15-gene model that classifies myeloma into 7 groups is also reported. Gene expression profiling also allows placing multiple myeloma into a developmental schema parallel to that of normal plasma cell differentiation. Development of a gene expression- or developmental stage-based classification system for multiple myeloma would lead to rational design of more accurate and sensitive diagnostics, prognostics and tumor-specific therapies for multiple myeloma.
