  • Publication number: 20020078839
Abstract: A lithographic newspaper printing press comprises printing units which are mounted on top of each other, forming a tower arrangement. Each printing unit comprises a first and a second plate cylinder having a length being substantially four times the width of a newspaper page and having a circumference being substantially equal to the height of a newspaper page. Each printing unit further comprises a first and a second blanket cylinder associated with said first and second plate cylinders, whereby each of said first and second blanket cylinders has substantially the same diameter as the associated plate cylinder. Each of the blanket cylinders carries a respective continuous sleeve-shaped printing blanket which is axially removable from the respective plate cylinder through an aperture formed in the side wall of the housing of the printing unit, while the respective blanket cylinder is cantilevered in the opposite side wall of the housing.

  • Publication number: 20020053294
Abstract: A web offset printing press for dual webs includes several printing units, each printing a color image on outer sides of a pair of webs. The webs travel through these printing units in a back-to-back arrangement. Additional printing units print another color image on the outer side. The webs may be separated during this process, with a pair of printing couples used for each web, so that one couple may print the additional image while the plate of the other is changed. The additional printing units also print a single-color image on the opposite side of each web.

  • Publication number: 20020000562
Abstract: Ultra-low leakage current backside-illuminated semiconductor photodiode arrays are fabricated using a method of formation of a transparent, conducting bias electrode layer that avoids high-temperature processing of the substrate after the wafer has been gettered. As a consequence, the component of the reverse-bias leakage current associated with strain, crystallographic defects or impurities introduced during elevated temperature processing subsequent to gettering can be kept extremely low. An optically transparent, conductive bias electrode layer, serving as both an optical window and an ohmic backside equipotential contact surface for the photodiodes, is fabricated by etching through the polysilicon gettering layer and a portion of the thickness of heavily-doped crystalline silicon layer formed within, and near the back of, the substrate during the gettering process.

  • Patent number: 6161604
Abstract: A web-up system is provided for a web-fed printing press, the web fed printing press having a plurality of components including a slitter mechanism. The web-up system includes either or both a web-up device and a ribbon winder. The web-up device is located adjacent to an output of a first component of the web-fed printing press, the first component located upstream from the slitter mechanism. The web-up device includes a splicing mechanism and a secondary web roll rotatably mounted on a shaft. The splicing mechanism receives a first web of material from the first component, receives a second web of material from the secondary web roll, splices the first web of material to the second web of material, and outputs a spliced web of material to the next downstream component of the press, e.g., the slitter mechanism. The ribbon winder is coupled to an output of the slitter mechanism. The slitter mechanism slits the web of material into at least a first and second ribbon.

  • Patent number: 6029574
Abstract: The present invention is directed to preventing image damage caused by pressure applied to print media during a folding process, by using pressure and abrasion resistant inks only on those sections of print media that are subjected to pressures that would otherwise damage the images printed on those sections. Images on other sections of the print media are printed using less expensive or general purpose inks.

  • Patent number: 5779123
Abstract: A rotational detector is attached to each of the rolls that might be passed over or under as part of a paper web/path. Each of the rotational detectors emits an output signal which indicates whether the roll it is attached to is moving and, if it is moving, the direction it is moving. A comparator compares the output from each of the rotational detectors to path requirement data for the path that the pressman intended to web. The comparator determines whether any mistakes have occurred and if an error has occurred the roll on which the mistake has occurred. The comparator then determines whether any of the mistakes which might have occurred are catastrophic, requiring rewebbing. If there are no catastrophic errors, a controller adjusts the register for any deviations from the intended path that might have occurred during webbing.

  • Patent number: 4900027
Abstract: A method of scoring card games wherein digital numbers within a predetermined set or range which is not needed in scoring the particular game is reserved for player identification. In performing the method of the invention it is preferred to utilize a special purpose computer contained in a small carrying case, which has an operating keyboard and a visually activated scoreboard in side-by-side relation to the keyboard. The carrying case preferably has a hinged lid which is spring-loaded to normally remain in open position, operating instructions written on the inner side of the lid, and a latch for holding the lid closed. In operating the apparatus, a WE or THEY key is depressed before making player assignments by number. Scores subsequently recorded and visually displayed for each team are also stored in electronic memory for each individual player.
