  • Publication number: 20020007248
Abstract: The invention provides an improved method for obtaining information about DNA analysis of samples of uncertain origin by establishing the likelihood that they arose in certain manners compared with other possible manners. In this way all of the analysis information is taken into account and likelihood ratios are provided to express the results. The invention is particularly useful in analysing small DNA samples or DNA samples where the contribution from one or more sources is small.

  • Patent number: 6213715
Abstract: A fan structure includes a fan head having a plurality of blades mounted for rotation. A mechanism is coupled to the fan head and is constructed and arranged to move the fan head along a surface of a sphere in a three dimensional pattern. At least one motor is constructed and arranged to cause rotation of the blades and movement of the mechanism. The mechanism thus provides both back-and-forth and up-and-down motion of the fan head.

  • Patent number: 6174786
Abstract: A method of shallow trench isolation by forming a trench in a semiconductor device comprises the steps of forming an oxide layer; forming a mask layer; anisotropically etching the mask layer; forming a second oxide layer; forming a cap layer; forming rounded end caps adjacent the mask; and transferring the rounding of the caps to the top corners of the trench. The oxide layer is formed over a substrate of the semiconductor device. The mask layer is formed over the oxide layer. The mask layer is then anisotropically etched to form the mask and an opening in the mask. The opening in the mask exposes the substrate, and the width of the opening is greater than the width of the trench. Blanket etching the cap layer forms the rounded end caps. The rounded end caps are adjacent to the mask on opposite ends of the opening, and the distance between the end caps is about equal to the width of the trench. The trench is formed by plasma etching the trench.

  • Patent number: 5846843
Abstract: A long range surface plasmon resonance sensor for use in biological, biochemical or chemical testing. The sensor includes a first dielectric medium and a second dielectric medium having an index of refraction approximately matching the first dielectric medium. A double-grating structure is located between the first dielectric medium and the second dielectric medium. A beam of electromagnetic radiation is introduced into the second dielectric medium in a manner which causes long range surface plasmon resonance to occur such that the beam of radiation suffers attenuated total reflection. The characteristics of the resonance dependent upon the reaction between the bonding layer and the targeted bonding molecule are then detected.

  • Patent number: 5815714
Abstract: A method and apparatus for re-generating debug commands is provided comprising a source program having embedded debug commands in a first distinguishable field, and an assembler. The assembler operates on the source code extracting the embedded debug commands and associated address information from the source code while generating object code. The debug commands are stored in a command file for use during simulation. A simulator executes the assembled object code in conjunction with a debugger which executes the stored debug commands as designated during the execution cycle. Upon the termination of a simulation run and the subsequent modification of the source program, the debug commands are automatically re-generated with correct addresses as determined during the subsequent assembly. When the edited source file is loaded, the break-points are cleared and a new command file is executed to insure that the break-points are relocated to the correct source lines.

  • Patent number: 5804359
Abstract: Photographic elements are disclosed in which exposure to at least one portion of the spectrum is recorded by a silver halide emulsion layer unit as an image having its optical density provided by silver. The layer unit is comprised of a plurality of radiation sensitive silver halide emulsion layers that are responsive to the same region of the spectrum, but differ in sensitivity, including a non-wandering silver halide reducing agent. A molar ratio of reducing agent to silver halide in one of the emulsion layers is less than that stoichiometrically required for complete silver halide reduction to silver. A higher molar ratio of reducing agent to silver halide is contained in a remaining of the two emulsion layers.

  • Patent number: 5743052
Abstract: A business recovery system includes an array of modular work stations, a central communications center, modular cables, and a trellis structure for establishing a data and power link between the work stations and communications center. The trellis structure is used for channelling cables from the communications center overhead to conduits, or pods, located at each group. The pods are fastened to walls of cubicles housing the work stations. A series of modular jacks on the conduit are used to connect localized data and power links to each work station, thus providing a direct data and power link between the work stations and the communications center.

  • Patent number: 5745674
Abstract: A method of moving records, stored on a recovery log, which are associated with units of work which have waited for a long time is described. Units of work which have waited for a long time, such as those which are in-doubt have their records copied from a recovery log to a secondary log. When the earliest-written record for this in-doubt unit of work has been copied, a new record called a fork record is written on to the recovery log which has two effects: to subtract the log records currently on the recovery log for this unit of work from the recovery log and to refer to the copied records written on the secondary log. The new record achieves this using two pointers, a pointer to point to the most-recently written record on the recovery log for this unit of work and a pointer to point to the most-recently written record on the secondary log for this unit of work.

  • Patent number: 5483976
Abstract: A urethral plug assembly having a cooperating housing and inner member, the plug assembly possessing a contracted diameter for insertion and removal through the orifice of the urethra, and a larger, expanded diameter for blocking the flow of urine in the urethra, bladder neck and bladder. A larger diameter is achieved by mechanical deployment of the inner member, which results in the expansion of the housing, or in another embodiment, which results in the expansion of the inner member. A balloon is additionally expanded, thus sealing the plug assembly to the urethral, bladder neck and bladder wall. The plug assembly further has a meatal plate for anchoring the plug assembly in the urethra, preventing migration of the plug assembly into the bladder. Removal of the plug assembly for bladder evacuation, is easily accomplished by pulling a cord causing the contraction of the expanded housing or inner member, and grasping a tab associated with said meatal plate.

  • Patent number: 4991285
Abstract: A multi-layer board is fabricated by plating up conductive posts on a nonconductive layer. The tops of the posts are planarized, resulting in sharp corners. The posts are aligned with a template, which has a hole above each post, and a second nonconductive layer is placed between the top of the posts and the bottom of the template. The two layers are laminated together by compressing the second layer between the first layer and the template, and the posts punch through the second layer. Conductive traces may then be etched or deposited between the posts tops, and the process may be repeated as many times as desired.

  • Patent number: 4512405
Abstract: A method for pneumatically transferring particluate solid materials into an earth formation penetrated by a well bore is shown. A gas is flowed into the well bore to establish the desired injection rate and pressure. A particulate solid material is then added to the established gas flow passing into the well bore by flowing a gas containing an entrained particulate solid material into the established gas flow to thereby transfer the solid particulate material pneumatically into the well bore.

  • Patent number: 4052787
Abstract: A method for producing beam leads, i.e. electrical contacts, on flexible circuits or multilayer circuits for interconnecting devices is disclosed. The method consists of processing a metal foil to expose a beam lead interconnection pattern, plating the exposed pattern with metal, coating a base insulating layer with an adhesive, punching cavities in the adhesive coated insulating layer, engaging the coated side of the base insulating layer to the metal foil, and applying a cushioning material on the opposite side of the adhesive coated insulating layer. The metal foil and the insulating layer are then laminated causing the cushioning material to flow into the pre-punched cavities thereby providing a protective cushioning-type backing for the metal-plated beam lead interconnection pattern.
