  • Patent number: 12488498
Abstract: A method for measuring a cooling rate of molten material uses a single thermal image of a heating process having a known pixel speed, and identifies a first pixel set having a first known temperature, a second pixel set having a second known temperature and a pixel distance between the first pixel set and the second pixel set. The method uses the first temperature, the second temperature, the known pixel speed and the pixel distance to determine the cooling rate. By detecting, in an uncalibrated thermal image of a heating process using a material, areas having specific states (specifically in the molten state and in the solidified state), and knowing the actual temperature in the solidified state (because of the known physical properties of that type of material), it is possible to determine the emissivity of the material in the solid state.

  • Patent number: 8828310
Abstract: A stopper rod having an elongate trunk with an upstream first end and a downstream second end, a continuous axial bore extending through the trunk from a stopper inlet in the upstream first end to a stopper outlet in the downstream second end, and a flow control device disposed within the bore to create a backpressure upstream thereof. The flow control device includes a body having an inlet, an outlet and a passageway therebetween, a wire positioned substantially axially in the passageway, and a retainer for maintaining the wire in the passageway. In one embodiment, the retainer is constituted by a portion of the wire itself, which is bent or crimped or configured as a loop; kink or spiral which prevents the wire from being dislodged from the passageway.

  • Patent number: 7973111
Abstract: Disclosed is a method to safely terminate a runaway reaction within a reaction vessel, comprising: sensing an increase in pressure in the reaction vessel, opening a barrier blocking a flow path into the reactor, wherein the barrier opening is achieved via a mechanical response to the sensed increase in pressure, and injecting a kill agent into the reaction vessel via the opened flow path, thereby terminating the reaction. Also disclosed is a system for performing the method. The system functions without an external electrical source and is therefore compliant with ASME standards.
