  • Publication number: 20140037488
Abstract: Current piston based air-conditioning system compressors only have isentropic efficiencies near 50%. Making internal leakage and friction negligible, via detailed design of the vane machine, would almost halve power consumption. In addition, by recovering expansion energy that is normally wasted via an expander, the system Coefficient of Performance COP can be improved up to an additional 30%.

  • Patent number: 7823398
Abstract: Improvements to a rotating-vane integral compressor/expander are outlined to significantly improve efficiency. A method to simply achieve variable-flow operation is also described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 7, 2006
Date of Patent: November 2, 2010
    Inventor: John Stewart Glen
  • Patent number: 5819554
Abstract: A rotating vane machine is described in which compression and energy recovery expansion is obtained within one compact design. The machine is operated in conjunction with a new thermodynamic cycle which approaches the ideal reversed Carnot cycle to optimize efficiency. The new cycle simplifies control, and enables the rotating machinery to be of simple construction.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 31, 1995
Date of Patent: October 13, 1998
    Assignee: Refrigeration Development Company
    Inventor: John Stewart Glen
  • Patent number: 5769617
Abstract: A rotary sliding-vane compressor is described which contains a single rotor with compressor and expander sections, together with a reduced number of parts and efficiency improvements compared to conventional compressors.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 30, 1996
Date of Patent: June 23, 1998
    Assignee: Refrigeration Development Company
