  • Publication number: 20240117729
Abstract: Systems and methods to determine angular offset between reference points on a drill string are achieved automatically using an electronic device, such as a handheld device. A first orientation value corresponding to the first highside reference point is obtained using the electronic device. A second a second orientation value corresponding the second highside reference point is obtained. The electronic device then calculates the angular offset between the first and second orientation values.

  • Publication number: 20220356769
Abstract: A stabilizer for use in a wellbore may include a downhole tubular configured to couple to a downhole conveyance in a wellbore, as well as two or more helical blades extending radially outward from the downhole tubular. The two or more helical blades are oriented about the downhole tubular to form respective flow paths between adjacent blades. Further, each blade of the two or more helical blades may include a line-of-sight face and a gauge ramp. The line-of-sight face is formed adjacent a leading inner blade wall of the blade at a lower end of the blade and is angularly offset from the leading inner blade wall. The gauge ramp extends from an outer surface of the downhole tubular toward an outer blade surface of the blade proximate the lower end of the blade.

  • Patent number: 10138683
Abstract: A directional casing-while-drilling system includes a rotary steerable system disposed within a casing string used as a drill string during casing-while-drilling operations. The casing string of some embodiments may include an upper section and a lower section coupled by a swivel, which may enable the upper section of the casing string to be rotated without substantially rotating the lower section. The rotary steerable system may be disposed at least partially within the lower section of the casing string, and coupled to a drill bit and/or under-reamer. The rotary steerable system may enable radial diversion of the drill bit and/or under-reamer, for example by actuation of one or more components in the rotary steerable system.

  • Publication number: 20180266181
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a power unit for a downhole drilling motor includes fabricating a stator that provides two or more stator lobes that define an internal profile, and fabricating a rotor that provides at least one rotor lobe that defines an external profile that both rotates and precesses within the internal profile during operation. At least one of an external geometry and an internal geometry of the rotor along all or a portion of the rotor may be varied to alter a stiffness and mass of the rotor and thereby optimize stiffness and force balancing with respect to the stator. The rotor may then be rotatably positioned within the stator and thereby optimize the functioning and reliability of the motor power unit, of the downhole drilling motor assembly, of associated downhole drilling equipment, and to enhance directional drilling tendency modelling and directional drilling trajectory control.

  • Patent number: 7857064
Abstract: A recess shoe system includes a recess shoe an insert sleeve disposed radially inwardly adjacent of the recess shoe in a portion of the recess shoe. The insert sleeve includes a ring and a plurality of fingers extending from the ring, the fingers being radially outwardly deflectable in response to a radially outwardly directed force. The force is generated by a swage in a swaging position acting on an inside dimension of the insert sleeve, and the insert sleeve is radially inwardly retractable when the radially outwardly directed force is removed such that the fingers of the insert sleeve define a tubular structure having an outside dimension smaller than an outside dimension of the swage in the swaging position and method.

  • Publication number: 20060114414
Abstract: A subject (12) observes an image on a display (10). A control (18) produces a fixation image at a selected position in the display, followed by a stimulus spaced from the fixation image. An eye position sensor (14) detects a saccade movement towards the stimulus. The stimulus is then replaced with a fixation image and the cycle repeated. The time taken to saccade plus the intensity of the stimulus are used to produce a retinal map of field of vision, or to assess other characteristics of the subject.
