Patent number: 10502429Abstract: A cooktop appliance includes a control valve, a spark generator, and a spark switch. The control valve includes a rotatable member for controlling gas flow rates to a burner assembly of the cooktop appliance. The spark generator provides a spark to ignite gas in the burner assembly. The spark switch may be mounted to the control valve, and may include a rotor fixedly mounted to the rotatable member. The rotor may be rotatable between an initial position and a first position. In the initial position, the spark generator does not receive electrical power. In the first position, the spark generator does receive electrical power. The spark generator may be configured to introduce a time delay between receiving electrical power and providing the spark to ignite gas in the burner assembly.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2016Date of Patent: December 10, 2019Assignee: Haier US Appliance Solutions, Inc.Inventors: David William Billman, John Thurl Pottenger

Publication number: 20160025347Abstract: A gas burner assembly includes a burner base and a bottom plate. The burner base includes a round burner and an elongated burner. The bottom plate is mounted to the burner base. A Venturi mixing tube of the round burner is positioned or disposed within a collar of the bottom plate.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 23, 2014Publication date: January 28, 2016Inventors: Paul Bryan Cadima, John Thurl Pottenger

Publication number: 20150345799Abstract: A gas burner assembly for an appliance has a gas stability chamber with a simmer flame port for providing a re-ignition source to primary burner ports positioned around the burner. The gas stability chamber has at least one primary stability chamber gas inlet and at least one secondary stability chamber gas inlet. The secondary stability chamber gas inlet is configured to provide a gas flow in the stability chamber with a velocity component that is offset from a radial direction of the gas burner assembly. This offset causes a flame at the simmer flame port to drift in the direction of an opposing side of the stability chamber from the secondary stability chamber gas inlet. As a result, the flamelet at the simmer flame port can more readily ignite the fuel exiting adjacent primary burner ports.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 28, 2014Publication date: December 3, 2015Applicant: General Electric CompanyInventors: Paul Bryan Cadima, John Thurl Pottenger

Publication number: 20150037737Abstract: An improved ignition system is provided for use with a gaseous fuel burner on a cooktop of an appliance. A flame sensor is used to detect the presence of a flame at the gaseous fuel burner. When the flame is detected as absent for at least a certain predetermined period of time, the ignition system attempts to reignite the flame. During the predetermined time period, the ignition system does not attempt to reignite the flame even though the flame is not detected. As such, the flame has an opportunity to restore itself fully around the burner during the predetermined time period before the ignition system is activated.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2013Publication date: February 5, 2015Applicant: General Electric CompanyInventors: John Thurl Pottenger, Paul Bryan Cadima

Patent number: 8057223Abstract: A burner assembly for a gas powered cooking appliance is provided. The burner assembly may include a burner body including a central region and a plurality of radiating extensions extending radially outward from the central region. The burner assembly may include a burner cap with a central region and a plurality of radiating extensions extending radially outward from the central region. The burner cap is positioned on top of the burner body when the burner is assembled. The burner cap may include at least one overhang positioned on the outer perimeter of the central region and between an adjacent pair of radiating extensions. The at least one overhang forms a gap between the exterior wall of the burner body and the interior wall of the overhang. This gap, or flame stabilization chamber, provides for collection of gases and flame that aid in maintaining the flame during low temperature operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2009Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: Electrolux Home ProduceInventors: William Michael Pryor, Hector Jose Donastorg, John Thurl Pottenger, Michael Dennis Padgett
