  • Patent number: 7056868
Abstract: Water soluble associative polymers and compositions comprising them together with alkali metal salts of carboxylic acid are disclosed. Methods comprise introducing into a wellbore a fluid comprising such associative polymers and alkali metal salts of carboxylic acid, e.g., cesium formate. Disclosed water soluble associative polymers have functionality including at least sulfonate groups, carboxylate groups and hydrophobes associative with one another in a saturated aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of a carboxylic acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 30, 2001
Date of Patent: June 6, 2006
Assignees: Cabot Corporation, Fritz Industries, Inc.
Inventors: William J. Benton, Edward E. Miller, Neil Magri, John Toups
  • Patent number: 6818595
Abstract: A drilling fluid or mud is described wherein the drilling fluid contains at least one alkali metal formate or monovalent carboxylic acid salt. The drilling fluid preferably further contains at least one emulsifier or surfactant and at least one hydrocarbon-based fluid. The drilling fluids of the present invention can contain other conventional ingredients. The present invention permits drilling fluids to be essentially solids free due to the use of the alkali metal formate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 14, 2002
Date of Patent: November 16, 2004
    Assignee: Cabot Specialty Fluids, Inc.
Inventors: William J. Benton, John A. Toups, U. Roger Weems

  • Patent number: 5607901
Abstract: An environmentally acceptable, thermally insulating annular fluid comprised of a liquid which is non-aqueous, non-corrosive, and thermally insulating, a clay gellant, and a clay dispersant. A preferred packer fluid includes an ester originated from a vegetable or animal oil as at least a major portion of the liquid phase.
