Abstract: Disclosed are discharge lamps for use in tanning applications and methods of making the same. The lamps include, among other elements, an elongated vitreous tube which has an outer periphery and axially opposed first and second ends that define an axial length for the tube. A coating is applied on the interior of the tube for emitting ultraviolet radiation in tanning wavelengths when a voltage to the lamp. The coating is specifically formulated so that the ultraviolet radiation emitted from the lamp in a range of about 320 nm to about 340 nm is less than or equal to about 10 percent of the ultraviolet radiation emitted from the lamp in a range of about 280 nm to about 400 nm.
