    Abstract: A shock strut for supporting and dampening a load with a two-phase dampening characteristic. The shock strut includes an inner cylinder slidably mounted within an outer cylinder, each of the cylinders having slidably mounted therein a piston. A first one of the pistons in the outer cylinder defines a first gas chamber, a second one of the pistons in the inner cylinder defines a second gas chamber. Between the cylinders is a metering device that defines a third and fourth fluid chambers. At full extension of the shock strut, a first stage of dampening is provided as the first gas chamber is compressed by fluid flowing through the metering device into the third chamber from the fourth chamber. As the shock strut is compressed, a second stage of dampening is provided by fluid flowing through the metering device into the fourth chamber and compressing the second gas chamber.

    Abstract: An object lock management system for use in a parallel data processing system where objects are accessible by processing activities on computing nodes within the parallel system. The system includes local lock control elements, where each of the local lock control element coordinates the locking of a predetermined set of objects. In particular, each local lock control element grants locks or queues lock requests in response to lock requests. Lock information is selectively reported to a global deadlock detector which performs deadlock detection. The global deadlock detector instructs the local lock control elements to release selected locks and queued lock requests upon detecting a deadlock. Lock information is reported to the global deadlock detector periodically and only for queued lock requests that have timed-out, whereby message traffic and processing overhead is reduced in the parallel system.

    Abstract: A main landing gear assembly for an airplane includes a set of landing wheels journalled to a shock-absorber strut. The shock strut and wheels are swingably attached to the wing structure by a pair of trunnion bearings for lateral swinging movement between an extended position wherein the wheels depend downwardly from the wing for taxiing or landing of the airplane and a retracted position wherein the wheels and shock strut are swung inwardy and upwardly into a wheel bay in the airplane fuselage. The shock strut is braced in the extended position by a foldable drag strut and a foldable side strut, each strut attached at an intermediate position on the shock strut. The foldable struts and the trunnion bearings provide a four-point support configuration which allows a net reduction in aircraft weight due to improved distribution of drag and static loads into the wing/body structure.

    Abstract: A lawn tractor including a fuel tank constructed to permit tipping of at least 30.degree. with respect to the horizontal without spilling of gasoline from the tank. The fuel tank includes a bottom wall, side walls and a top wall, the top wall supporting a central filling stem. The top wall and side walls define a pair of air entrapment cavities at the periphery of the fuel tank and located above the base of the filling neck. When the fuel tank is level and filled, air is trapped in the entrapment cavities. If the tank is subsequently tipped, air is permitted to escape from one of the cavities into the filling neck and fuel will flow into that cavity thereby preventing the fuel in the filling neck from being spilled.

    Abstract: A folding tiller handle is made in two pieces connected for limited relative longitudinal and pivotal movement, one piece being a permanent part of the basic tiller assembly. A belt tightening idler sheave is associated with a belt drive which provides the motive forde for rotating the tiller tine assembly. A control, which includes two separable rigid rod members, moves the idler sheave into and out of tightening engagement with the drive belt. The rods are joined through a connection which imparts rotary motion from one rod to the other and which also permits relative longitudinal movement therebetween to separate the rods. The rods are associated with respective pieces of the tiller handle so that when the handle is separated or folded, the control connection to the tightening sheave through the rods is interrupted and the drive belt cannot be tightened to establish the tiller drive.

    Abstract: A belt drive including a pulley, a belt reeved about the pulley and means for slacking the belt to disengage it from the pulley is provided with a shroud about the pulley which has portions narrowly spaced from the edges of the pulley to capture the slacked belt between the pulley and the shroud, thus to guide the belt for proper engagement with the pulley during clutching, to prevent the slacked belt from coming off of the pulley and to coact with the declutched expanded belt to maintain it out of range of the pulley in the declutched mode. The shroud has a mounting bracket and fastening means for releasably attaching the bracket to the engine block. The fastening means comprises a positioning detent which engages a portion of the engine block and a single point fastener which releasably fastens the bracket to the engine block.
