Publication number: 20030093505Abstract: In accordance with methods and systems consistent with the present invention, a lease manager is provided for managing leases between clients and other network services. To use the lease manager, a client enters into a management lease with the lease manager, specifying an amount of time during which the lease manager can manage preexisting leases between the client and network services on behalf of the client. This management includes renewing the preexisting leases with the other network services. Further, the lease manager notifies the client when a lease between the lease manager and the client is near expiration. The lease manager also notifies the client of failed attempts to renew the preexisting leases, as well as the management lease, either with a network service or with the lease manager.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 6, 2002Publication date: May 15, 2003Applicant: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventors: James H. Patent number: 5312813Abstract: A method of killing microorganisms which form a biofilm on a tissue or implant surfaces in a patient, and which are refractory to a biocide at a dose which is effective to kill the microorganism in planktonic form. The effect of the biocide is potentiated, to an effective killing level, by applying an electric field across the surface containing the biofilm.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1992Date of Patent: May 17, 1994Assignee: University Technologies InternationalInventors: John W. Microbial manipulations of surfactant-containing foams to reduce subterranean formation permeability
Patent number: 5174378Abstract: A microbial system is provided for selective plugging of permeable regions of a subterranean formation, for use in conjunction with injection of surfactant-containing foams. Bacteria indigenous to the target formation are isolated, and selected for ability to degrade the surfactant of interest. Small, non-adherent ultramicrobacteria, or UMB, are prepared from the selected culture by starvation. The UMB and the surfactant-containing foam are then injected into the target formation. The surfactant allows the foam to penetrate into the formation. The UMB then revive to their vegetative state, degrade the surfactant and produce exopolymer, thus plugging the formation.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1991Date of Patent: December 29, 1992Assignee: Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research AuthorityInventors: John W. F. Costerton, Francene Cusack, Theodore J. Cyr, Sandra A. Blenkinsopp, Carol P. Anderson -
Patent number: 5156840Abstract: The invention relates to amine-containing porphyrin derivatives. Theporphyrins can be used as photosensitizers which are useful as therapeutic agents. Also described are methods for preparing conjugates in which a porphyrin derivative is covalently attached to an antibody or antibody fragment. In vivo therapeutic methods utilizing the conjugates are also desired.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1989Date of Patent: October 20, 1992Assignee: Cytogen CorporationInventors: John W. F. Goers, Hurley D. King, Chyi Lee, Daniel J. Coughlin, Vernon L. Alvarez, John D. Rodwell, Thomas J. McKearn

Patent number: 5119482Abstract: An inertial Navigation System (INS) data interface box allows the transfer of INS data to standard commercial computer (i.e. Personal Computer or PCs) for flexible in-flight use of data received from the INS. The data box includes a means connected to the data bus for changing the INS output from 12 to 5 volts. The data of interest is then applied to a Label/Decode circuit which in turn directs the data to a Write Address Generator circuit which then applies the data to a Page One Memory Buffer circuit. After the data is filed in the Page One Memory Buffer, the Write Address Generator directs a Page Control circuit to turn to a Page Two Memory Buffer to accept the next cycle of data. During the interim data can be read out of the Page One buffer and converted to 8 bit words for applications to the PC. Should the 8 Bits Converter be processing data, "page flips" is inhibited to prevent readout from the Page Two Buffer from mutilating Page One Buffer data as it is being read out.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1989Date of Patent: June 2, 1992Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: John W. F. Lloyd

Patent number: 4419248Abstract: A method is provided for removing biofilm from a surface submerged in water. The method includes cooling the biofilm to below the freezing point of water to thereby generate large, sharp-edged ice crystals in the biofilm. The frozen biofilm is then thawed and removed from the surface by, for instance, flowing a liquid across the surface.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1982Date of Patent: December 6, 1983Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in right of the Province of Alberta, as represented by the Minister of Energy and Natural ResourcesInventor: John W.
