  • Patent number: 6696174
Abstract: A method for making a repair to a repair site of a structure made from at least a first tube and a second tube which are joined together with welds. The method includes cleaning and preparing the at least first tube and second tube tubes at the repair site for bonding with composite repair materials. Next, fiber-reinforced polymer composite repair materials are applied to the repair site. These composite materials include at least one elongate, composite tendon strip which is placed on the at least a first tube and a second tube such that the composite tendon strip bridges at least the first tube and a second tube, and a composite strip which is wrapped around and overlays the tendon strip with additional composite strips. The invention also provides a metal structure reinforced with a composite material repair site according to the method.

  • Patent number: 6296006
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for sealing leaks in electrical insulators and other equipment without the need for depressurizing that equipment. The system and method may be readily adapted to seal any joint, regardless of its configuration. In addition, while the system and method provide an effective and sure seal, the seal may be readily removed in order to change out the leaking component at a future date. A tubular seal is maneuvered into position to encircle the leaking joint. A reinforcing layer is applied over the seal. The seal is then filled with sealant under pressure. The seal isolates the sealant and its direct hydraulic pressure from the operating components to prevent the sealant from contacting those components, while simultaneously providing sufficient force against the leaking joint to stop the leak.

  • Patent number: 5381815
Abstract: A method for isolating a relief valve, the relief valve being positioned in fluid communication with a pressurized vessel by positioning a gate valve body between and in fluid communication with the relief valve and the pressurized vessel, the gate valve body including a plug and a cap positioned to sealingly close an opening in the gate valve body generally covered by a gate valve bonnet cover and yoke, removing the cap, sealingly positioning a sandwich valve over the opening in the gate valve so that when the pass-through is opened a passageway through the pass-through sandwich valve is generally co-axial with the opening in the gate valve, sealingly positioning a removable yoke over the passageway through the pass-through, the removable yoke including a stem and being adapted to movement of the stem through the removable yoke; opening the pass-through; moving the stem into engagement with the plug and removing the plug from the opening in the gate valve body; and positioning a valve gate on the stem and mo

  • Patent number: 4609042
Abstract: A casing safety device and method are disclosed for preventing tools from falling into an open well casing and for venting gases to a distance above the open mouth of the casing. An inflatable bladder is provided for placement in the casing adjacent the open mouth, and the bladder is inflated to block the casing and provide a stop against which falling tools come to rest. Damage to the bladder is prevented by a circular rubber shroud disposed between the bladder and the open mouth of the casing which reduces the velocity of falling objects before they strike the bladder. A vent is also provided for conveying downhole fluids, such as flammable gases, to a distance above the open mouth of the casing.

  • Patent number: 4513788
Abstract: A flange system for locking a plug in a pipeline flange. The flange system includes a flange with an axial passage for receiving a pipeline plug with a first annular groove. At least one radial passage for receiving a locking means and at least one locking means for engaging the first annular groove for locking the plug in place within the flange. Each such locking means is carried in a radial passage in the flange, the radial passage including a threaded driver bore and an unthreaded pin bore. Each such locking means includes a driver threadedly carried in the driver bore and a pin attached to the driver and carried in the pin bore. The locking means may include an arcuate locking collar carried by the pin, such that rotation of the driver causes the locking collar to be inserted into or retracted from the first annular groove of the plug, for locking and unlocking the plug in the flange.

  • Patent number: 4141378
Abstract: This invention relates to a pressure/vacuum system apparatus; one part of such apparatus being an economical fitting, another part being operating mechanism, another part being a means to join such fitting to such operating mechanism in a substantially fluid-tight manner, all operable to perform certain functions together without shutting down the pressure/vacuum system they are attached to. Some installations require many fittings. In many instances an operating mechanism may be attached to an operated fitting for only short periods of time and then disconnected therefrom, leaving the operated fitting in (a) a dormant condition in relation to its functions to the pressure/vacuum system, or (b) in a functional condition in relation to the pressure/vacuum system. Thus, in many cases a single operating mechanism may be used for operating each of a number of different fittings from time to time as required.
