  • Patent number: 8007396
Abstract: An automatic transmission includes a first planetary gearset having a first planet pinion set rotatably supported on a common carrier and drivingly engaged with a first sun gear and a first composite gear that acts both as a first ring gear and a second sun gear. A second planetary gearset includes a second planetary pinion set rotatably supported on the common carrier and drivingly engaged with a third sun gear, the first composite gear and a second composite gear that acts both as a second ring gear and a third ring gear. A third planetary gearset has a third planet pinion set rotatably supported on the common carrier and drivingly engaged with a third sun gear and the second composite gear. A series of nested clutches and multiple bakes are employed to establish six forward speed ratios and one reverse ratio using a single carrier.

  • Patent number: 6290044
Abstract: A selectable one-way clutch assembly for use in an automatic transmission comprises a strut plate rotatable about a central hub and having pockets and struts mounted therein for pivotable rotation. A selecting plate concentrically located about an activator hub has teeth extending axially inboard and configured to fit in the apertures in an activator plate. A turning device is selectively operable to activate one-way clutching mode by rotating the pin of a control plate to disengage selecting cams and displace selecting plate teeth inboard beyond the inboard face of the activator plate wherein the struts catch the teeth when the strut plate assembly is rotated in a clutching direction. The catching ends of the struts are cammed in the pockets by ramped camming ends of the teeth when the strut plate assembly is rotated in the opposing direction, thereby allowing freewheeling of the strut plate in the overrun direction.

  • Patent number: 5928105
Abstract: A planet carrier assembly has a plurality of pinion gears rotatably mounted in a cage or spider. A stationary washer, having four bearing pads, is disposed adjacent the sidewall of the planet carrier cage. Th& sidewalls are spaced and have aligned openings to accept pinion pins on each of which a pinion gear is rotatably mounted. A rotatable washer, or thrust bearing, is disposed between each pinion gear and respective bearing pads of the stationary washers.

  • Patent number: 5830098
Abstract: A planetary gear arrangement has one or more planetary gear sets each having a carrier assembly in which a plurality of pinion gears are rotatably mounted on pins supported in a carrier housing. An annular lube dam is attached to the carrier housing and includes a first and second annular sidewall portions extending radially inward and joined by an axial wall portion. The radially innermost sidewall portion directs lubrication fluid to the support pins for delivery to the pinion gears. The axial wall engages notched portions on the pins to ensure the angular orientation of the lube passages formed in the pins. The outermost annular wall portion provides a thrust washer bearing surface between the carrier assembly and an adjacent transmission component to support relative rotation therebetween.
