  • Patent number: 12220349
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed comprising an ultrasonic handpiece having a housing, a working tip extending from the distal end of the housing, and a crystal and horn assembly positioned within the housing. The proximal end of the ultrasonic horn is free to move relative to the housing. In embodiments, the ultrasonic horn is resiliently suspended within the housing, with no rigid fixation points. The ultrasonic horn may be resiliently suspended by one or more resilient rings at the proximal end of the ultrasonic horn and by one or more resilient rings at the single nodal region of the ultrasonic horn. The ultrasonic handpiece may include a pumping module located at the proximal end of the handpiece.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 3, 2020
Date of Patent: February 11, 2025
    Assignee: Alcon Inc.
Inventors: John Zhongyu Yan, John Morgan Bourne, Francisco Javier Ochoa

  • Publication number: 20160089268
Abstract: An ophthalmic surgical hand piece comprises a driver coupled to a horn, a venturi pump with an inlet aspiration port and an outlet aspiration port, and a hand piece shell at least partially enclosing the driver, the horn, and the venturi pump. A needle is coupled to an end of the horn. A rigid, non-compliant aspiration path extends between the hollow needle and the outlet aspiration port. An aspiration pressure sensor measures a pressure in the aspiration path.

  • Patent number: 9283113
Abstract: A surgical hand piece comprises a generally cylindrical horn with a flange on one end. The flange has a central hub and first and second protruding sections. First and second polarized piezoelectric crystals are held against the flange such that rotative or torsional motion is induced in the horn.
