Patent number: 6962026Abstract: An expansion joint cover (10) comprises a first plate (18) hingedly attached to a first surface (14) of an expansion joint (12), a second plate (20) hingedly attached to the first plate (18), and a housing (26) fixedly secured to a second surface (16) of the expansion joint (12). During installation, a front plate (52) of the housing (26) can rotate about a hinge (58) to allow the second plate (20) to be installed within the housing (26). In use, the second plate (20) slides within the housing (26) to accommodate variations in separation distance and vertical offset between the two surfaces (14,16). Two hinges (36,44) accommodate variations in torsion between the two surfaces (14,16). The combination of the second plate (20) sliding within the housing (26) and the two hinges (36,44) accommodates variations in lateral offset between the two surfaces (14,16).Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2002Date of Patent: November 8, 2005Assignee: Balco, Inc.Inventors: Ronny L. Knak, Dean V. Balocca, Johnnie D. Hilburn, Jr.

Patent number: 6955017Abstract: A fire barrier transition (10,110,210,310) comprises a first section (130,230,330) to mate with a first fire barrier (14) in a first expansion joint (16), a second section (132,232,332) to mate with a second fire barrier (18) in a second expansion joint (20), and a center section (134,234,334) therebetween to seal a gap (12) between the barriers (14,18). The first section (130,230,330) and the second section (132,232,332) each present either a convex or a concave cross-section with two sidewalls (136,236,336) and a bight section (138,238,338) therebetween. Thus, the transition (10,110,210,310) preferably presents a specific shape with the first section (130,230,330) and the second section (132,232,332) each presenting channels aligned at an angle between the joints (16,20). The barriers (14,18) can slide between the sidewalls (136,236,336) and engage the bight sections (138,238,338), thereby mating with and sealing to the first section (130,230,330) and the second section (132,232,332).Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2002Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Balco, Inc.Inventor: Johnnie D. Publication number: 20040083669Abstract: An expansion joint cover (10) broadly comprises a cover plate (38) to cover an expansion joint (12) between a first and second surface (14,16), an anchor assembly (40) to secure the plate (38) to the first surface (14), an insert (46) to protect the second surface (16), and one or more resilient bushings (48) to isolate the plate (38) from the anchor assembly (40). Under adverse conditions, such as during seismic events, the surfaces (14,16) may move significantly with respect to one another, thereby causing the plate (38) to slide over the second surface (16) and the insert (46) and deform the bushings (48). Thus, the flexibility of the plate (38), the durability of the insert (46), and the resilience of the bushings (48) all cooperate to allow the cover (10) to minimize stresses otherwise transferred to the anchor assembly (40).Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2002Publication date: May 6, 2004Inventor: Johnnie D. Patent number: 6115980Abstract: An expansion joint cover apparatus (10) includes a cover plate (38) in covering relationship with the gap (12) between building sections(14,16). One edge (46) of the plate (38) is coupled to one building section (14) and the opposed edge (48) is slidably received in a recess (30) defined in the second building section (16) adjacent the gap (12). The second building section (16) includes a recess wall (34) between the recess (30) and the adjacent support surface (28). The apparatus (10) further includes a transition insert (44) mounted in the recess (30) against the recess wall (34). The insert (44) presents an insert wall (66) to provide a beveled transition between the recess area (30) and the support surface (28) in order to guide the plate edge (48) therebetween during relative movement between the building sections (14,16) and to protect the recess wall (34) from impact by the second edge (48) of the plate (38) during such movement.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1998Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Balco/MetalinesInventors: Ron Knak, Johnnie D.
