  • Patent number: 8434557
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for controlling the flow of hydrocarbons from a structure or conduit are provided. An engagement apparatus having a body with threads disposed on an end is lowered into a position suitable for engagement with the structure or conduit, the threads including a deformable material. Rotation of the apparatus to engage the threads with the structure or conduit deforms the material to form a wedge shape that provides a seal between the apparatus and structure or conduit, and resists removal of the apparatus from the structure or conduit. Additional conduits can be secured to the upper end of the apparatus, in combination with a valve. The valve can direct the flow of hydrocarbons from the structure or conduit to selected additional conduits, enabling vessels and/or containers to be removed and/or replaced without wholly ceasing the flow of hydrocarbons in a manner that could cause a buildup of pressure.
