Abstract: A tape-based data storage system according to one embodiment includes a head having an array of channels for writing a set of data tracks on a magnetic tape; wherein data to be written on the magnetic tape in a given pass of the tape relative to the head is parsed into at least two error correctable sets, wherein each of the error correctable sets is written by a unique subset of the array of channels. Abstract: An error correction code system, e.g. of a magnetic tape drive, applies error correction redundancy to data, separates it, or interleaves it, and records it into separate groups. An error correction encoder applies an outer error correction code to one of the separate groups of information, forming one set of rows of information and outer ECC information. An error correction encoder applies an outer error correction code to another separate group of information, forming another set of rows of information and outer ECC information. A data organizer interleaves the one set of rows of information and outer ECC information with the another set of rows of information and outer ECC information for recording on tracks of a recording media in an interleaved pattern of one set of rows of information and outer ECC information with another set of rows of information and outer ECC information.

Abstract: A cartridge case has the same general geometry and dimensions of a Magstar cartridge, but with modified lateral sides with recessed surfaces and additional gripping notches that permit the alternative use of the cartridge with either a Magstar or an LTO type of automated picker. The width of the bottom rear portion of the cartridge is reduced to conform to the width of a standard LTO cartridge and LTO gripping notches are provided by increasing the depth of the locating notches of the Magstar format to the size required for engagement by the fingers in the gripper arms of an LTO automated picker. As a result of this modification, the cartridge of the invention can be alternatively handled by either Magstar or LTO type of automated pickers.
