Abstract: There are provided methods and apparatus for transform selection in video coding. An apparatus includes a video encoder for encoding at least a block for encoding at least a block in a picture by selecting a transform to apply to a residue of the block from a set of two or more available transforms. The transform is selected based on at least one of an inter prediction mode used to predict at least one reference for the block, one or more values corresponding to a motion vector, a value of a residue of one or more previously encoded blocks, a value of prediction data for the block, one or more transform selections of one or more neighboring reconstructed blocks, and a quantization step applied to transform coefficients for the residue of the block.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for implicit adaptive motion vector predictor selection for video encoding and decoding. The method encodes an image block using implicit adaptive motion vector predictor selection. The motion vector for encoding the block is predicted by defining a set of motion vector predictor candidates for the block based on a plurality of spatio-temporal neighboring motion vectors; and then selecting from the set a particular motion vector predictor candidate as the motion vector for encoding the bloc. The selection is made responsive to respective values for a fidelity of the spatio-temporal neighboring motion vectors.

The encoding method encodes an image block in a picture by generating a measurement vector for the image block, encoding the measurement vector, and reconstructing the image block by minimizing a signal sparsity of the image block responsive to the encoded measurement vector, the measurement vector including transform coefficients relating to the image block. A corresponding decoding method decodes an image block for a picture by receiving a measurement vector for the image block, decoding the measurement vector, and reconstructing the image block by minimizing a signal sparsity of the image block responsive to the decoded measurement vector, wherein the measurement vector includes transform coefficients relating to the image block.

Abstract: There are provided methods and apparatus for adaptive mode video encoding and decoding. An apparatus includes an encoder for encoding adapted mode mapping information for a mapping between values of a mode index and modes available to encode at least a portion of a picture in a sequence of pictures. The adapted mode mapping information is adapted based on one or more actual parameters of the sequence.
